Do not tell me that the success of the Gulf Championship, since its inception in 1971 until today, is primarily due to the stars it boasts and the strong competitions among its teams, and that this is what has contributed to its continuity, the glow it enjoys, and the public interest, following, and attendance at its matches; this opinion, with all due respect, does not represent the complete truth, nor does it reflect what the championship has witnessed on the ground for more than five decades.
- I do not deny the legitimate and significant role of those who contributed to the inception of its idea, cared for it, and supported it at the level of the Gulf states' leadership. I will not overlook those beginnings when the football passion among Gulf audiences was limited to following their local club championships, at a time when the external participation of Gulf clubs and teams was limited and hardly worth mentioning.
- Because of this passion, Gulf audiences had no choice but this championship, so they attended its matches in large numbers in the stadiums and followed it on television, at a time when the image was in black and white, and it was not easy to distinguish between the colors of the players' shirts.
- Naturally, every new thing has its own flavor and the eagerness to experience it, especially when it comes after years of waiting; therefore, the joy was immense for this inaugural championship, enjoying its competitions, and taking pride in its stars.
- More importantly, the Gulf states found themselves in front of a sporting event that brings together its people and contributes, through interaction and competition, to raising the level of Gulf football in general, a sport that was still "crawling" like a child who has not yet strengthened its back, and it did not have the continental and international presence that we see today. This, thank God, has been achieved over the years.
- This acknowledgment, with all its implications, does not negate the media role that played a significant part in supporting the goals of this championship and contributing to its success, through print media, specifically sports journalism, which provided comprehensive coverage including technical analyses, loud critical opinions, and very exciting press statements from officials, heads of delegations, and events in both image and word.
- These fiery statements alone were "a story" of the most important and beautiful stories that no Gulf memory can forget from generations that used to eagerly wait for the newspapers to be published and buy them early in the morning, to read those well-known fiery statements in the Gulf sports arena, along with the accompanying disputes, debates, and skirmishes among critics.
- After that "enjoyable" and exciting journalistic phase, which was characterized and ignited more outside the field than inside by the "fiery" statements, came the phase of sports programs, which has another story with its presenters and guests from prominent critics, journalists, practicing football athletes, and stars who participated in this championship, or Arab players who had professional experiences in Gulf clubs.
- As soon as a match in this championship ends, you find viewers, from various backgrounds and football inclinations, "glued" to their screens, following and caring about what these programs will present in terms of strong opinions, useful analyses, and exciting statements, along with the subsequent comments and journalistic skirmishes that follow on the same night or the next day, and statements issued by the championship committees or the administrations of the participating teams.
One of the most controversial cases, and still is, is "refereeing".
- All this media uproar, along with the excitement and controversy it generates, and cases of commendable sports fanaticism for this championship, contributed to reviving it and attracting attention to it, and it could have lost its luster while still in its infancy.
- From here, sports media in the Gulf states played a major role in creating the success of the championship and convincing sports leaders of the importance of its continuation. The matter did not stop there; rather, the media received support and attention, and resources were allocated to facilitate its mission, allowing it to have that strong presence that forms an essential part of the championship's success system.
- I am not exaggerating if I say that this "player number one" contributed, alongside other key success elements, to developing the level of the Gulf player and raising the level of competition in the championship, until the Gulf teams, which were competing among themselves, reached a status, presence, and value at both the continental and international levels, alongside an increase in audience attendance and the expansion of television and media follow-up, through every available media platform in a world that has become a single village, and the hero of this story, in my opinion, is the player number one: the media.
- A final whisper:
As we live the atmosphere of Gulf 27, which will begin its competitions tomorrow, if the championship will be decided on the green rectangle, it will be more present, enjoyable, and exciting through screens and sports programs. What may tire the viewer is trying to follow everything that the sports programs offer, especially given their abundance and variety, but social media has largely solved this issue; what you miss on screen, you will later find through the applications and websites of these programs, as well as what their guests and presenters publish in terms of opinions and comments.
