- Public gatherings have their sanctity, privacy, and etiquette, and the same applies to lectures and seminars. Unfortunately, some individuals have degraded the attendance of these events to seek attention at the expense of others.
- What is the culture of gatherings and lectures? It is a long and intricate topic, but its essence is that you respect and value yourself. How is that achieved? By adhering to public etiquette, knowing your place and stature in the gathering, not speaking just to make noise, maintaining the correct sitting posture, and avoiding side conversations if there is a prominent individual present or during a lecture or seminar.
- Unfortunately, some attendees at gatherings, seminars, and lectures attempt to steal the spotlight from the speaker, as if the lecture or seminar was held for their sake. Others mistakenly believe they possess a high level of culture, insisting on expressing their opinions and discussing matters they are not knowledgeable about, trying to correct concepts from their perspective, which they see as the only correct one.
- The phenomenon of stealing the spotlight is evident in some participants' attempts to redirect the discussion towards themselves or monopolize the conversation for extended periods without adding any value. This behavior takes various forms, such as convoluted interjections that stray from the main topic or using showy language aimed at attracting attention and marginalizing the rest of the attendees. The negative impact of this behavior is not limited to wasting the seminar's time; it also frustrates competent participants and distracts the audience, who are present to benefit from the topic of the meeting rather than from the individuals.
- There are those who monopolize the front-row seats in gatherings and seminars, believing they are more deserving of them than others, even though they are not in their rightful place and the seats are reserved or marked "reserved." When asked to make way for the rightful occupant, they refuse adamantly, saying, "I am more deserving than him!"
- Such individuals do not recognize their true position in society; one may imagine themselves to be among the elite, insisting on placing themselves on a platform they do not deserve, even though society did not place them there; they imposed themselves upon it. Know your size and your correct position so that you do not become a subject of ridicule among people.
- Maintaining the dignity of seminars and gatherings requires instilling a culture of respecting shared space and understanding that the value of the speaker is not measured by the size of the space they monopolize, but by the depth of their presentation and their respect for the minds of the attendees and the status of their colleagues.
- A person's awareness of their true place is not a call to diminish oneself, nor is it a break from ambition; rather, it is one of the first steps toward maturity and awareness. It is the ability to make a sincere reconciliation between the actual capabilities you possess and the position you stand in today, and the goal you aspire to reach tomorrow.
- In conclusion, this behavior does not apply to the majority but is limited to a very small group afflicted with the disease of grandeur and narcissism, a condition that has no remedy except for consulting specialists in mental health, as psychological disorders are among the most challenging cases; because the individual often does not acknowledge their affliction.
Flash:
- Prince Badr bin Abdul Mohsen (may God have mercy on him) said: Know your place; do not lose yourself, and do not let anyone place you in a position you do not belong to or a lesser one. Know your place correctly... If you do not know your place, you will not be able to advance.
