The leader of the Bolshevik Revolution, Leon Trotsky, is attributed with saying: "You may not be interested in war... but war is interested in you." This is certainly our geographical fate, which has made us work hard to have a strong and diverse economy and advanced technical competencies, without neglecting the importance of investing in our defensive military capabilities.
If we recall a key phrase from Prince Saud Al-Faisal, may God have mercy on him, the former Foreign Minister, who spoke during a press conference following the launch of Operation "Decisive Storm," saying: "We are not advocates of war... but if the drums of war are sounded, we are ready." Therefore, it is important not to reduce the Kingdom's position on Yemen to the events of today, but rather to return to recent history, at least to 2011 during the height of what was called the Arab Spring.
At that time, the noose tightened around President Ali Abdullah Saleh and the People's Congress, and later the president was injured and went for treatment in the Kingdom. The Kingdom presented the Gulf Initiative, which was welcomed by the Yemenis, as a means to save their blood and avoid the Libyan and Syrian scenarios we witnessed. However, Saleh betrayed that trust, and then the Houthis betrayed it in every situation, with their signing of every agreement merely serving as a window to buy time and reposition themselves.
On another front, the Kingdom signed a non-aggression agreement with Iran under Chinese sponsorship in March 2023, and adhered to it during the American-Iranian war that began last February. However, Iran did not adhere to it on its part, and China, for its part, did not use its political weight to at least maintain its face as the sponsor of the agreement. Additionally, numerous reports have indicated that it is the primary provider of intelligence information and geographical systems to the Revolutionary Guard, which enabled it to target Gulf countries.
If we look at the minimum support positions, a pattern emerges from some countries, including China, a Gulf state, and some Arab countries in Africa, which support the Kingdom and condemn the attacks on its airports and civilian targets in a passive voice. As the linguistic definition states, it is an action whose doer is unknown or omitted for some reason!
On the other hand, many analysts have viewed the American position as one of cowardice and inconsistency, as it refrained from military participation and striking the Houthis. There are some caves and ammunition depots hidden in the mountains that certain American aircraft could make a difference in targeting. On the other hand, this could be interpreted as a claim of upcoming electoral pressure until November 3 and the fear of political pressure from opening two fronts. In both cases, maintaining communication channels between the Americans and the Houthis remains unjustified except in terms of the American administration's desire to preserve the truce.
Additionally, entities linked to financing the Houthis in Arab and Islamic countries have been revealed, but they have been subjected to recent American sanctions that have largely dried up Iranian and Houthi funding sources. Funding is of great importance given the Houthi economic situation, which has been dire since before the battle.
Of course, much has been revealed during the battle regarding the withdrawals of forces from areas controlled by the Houthis, from Al-Mokha to Bab el-Mandeb, along with discussions of coordination or prompting for this movement with external parties. However, the integrity of research requires me not to assert this in the absence of a neutral documentation mechanism, and time will reveal what has been hidden.
Several research centers have portrayed the Kingdom as standing alone in its battle to protect its territory and safeguard navigation in the corridor through which 12% of the world's trade passes, and that the Kingdom has received only superficial vocal support. Thus, they categorize it as a "stab in the neutrality of friends," not necessarily their betrayal, while this analysis overlooks Saudi capabilities.
This is a superficial and unrealistic analysis that ignores the Kingdom's capabilities and its close alliances. Here, it is necessary to commend the positions of France, Britain, and Italy, reaching the European Union, which has been one of the clearest entities in naming the principal and the agent in the recent targeting of civilian sites. It is also important to appreciate the positions of the Mecca Alliance, especially Pakistan, in its military support for the Kingdom.
Today, the Kingdom is delivering painful strikes to the Houthis on various fronts, and they respond only by targeting Saudi airports and attempting to execute a humanitarian disaster in Taiz. Thus, attacking the Kingdom is not a weakness in its defenses but rather a reflection of the pain and losses the Houthis are enduring. Therefore, they seek any outcry that might deceive some into thinking the scales are balanced.
The battle will end, and the gathering will disperse, but the Kingdom will remember who stood with it and who let it down, just as in all previous occasions. As the saying goes, attributed to various figures in European literature, and likely Italian: "O God, spare me the evil of my friends... as for my enemies, I can take care of them."
