I paused at the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health receiving the International Award for Outstanding Practices for 2026 from the International ORP Foundation in Argentina, as it is an international recognition that highlights the council's efforts to promote safety principles and standards in the workplace!
The Comprehensive National Program for Reporting and Investigating Work Accidents, Injuries, and Occupational Diseases, which received the award, is based on an important idea: it does not stop at recording the incident and addressing its effects as much as it focuses on understanding its causes and utilizing the results of the investigation to prevent its recurrence in the same establishment or in other establishments!
This idea coincides with a remarkable improvement in occupational safety indicators in the Kingdom. According to data provided by the council, the rate of non-fatal work injuries decreased from 416 injuries per 100,000 workers in 2018 to 245 injuries in 2025, while the mortality rate resulting from work injuries dropped from 3.282 to 1.3 per 100,000 workers. These indicators reflect significant progress in protecting workers, although it is inaccurate to attribute this improvement to a single program in isolation from the rest of the system's efforts!
Notably, the development has not been limited to programs but has also extended to organizing high-risk professions, professional fitness examinations, non-communicable diseases, and licensing and accrediting providers of occupational safety and health services. These regulations address risks from various angles, starting from the health and professional eligibility of the worker to the efficiency of the entities providing preventive services!
The indicators also reveal an expansion of the workforce in this field, with more than 53,000 jobs created in occupational safety and health by the end of the third quarter of 2026, and the compliance rate of establishments with safety standards reaching 75.1% by mid-year!
Occupational safety is not merely an administrative matter concerning establishments and regulatory bodies; it is a right for the worker, an interest for the employer, and a fundamental element in economic productivity. Every preventable injury means less pain for the worker and their family, fewer losses for the establishment, and a more stable, safe, and motivating work environment!
In short... the international award is a deserved recognition, but its true value lies in what the experience can add to daily practice. Success is not just in knowing why the incident occurred after it happens, but in using this knowledge to enhance a safe working environment!
