In a remarkable and painful step by all measures, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals has excluded the high school diploma percentage from its admission criteria, adopting the following weights: high school diploma equals zero, aptitude tests 50%, and the university achievement test 50%. I have no doubt that this prestigious university in our country, which always ranks high in global and Arab university evaluations, has its logical reasons for making the high school diploma percentage not an important factor in this mechanism. I wish the university would justify and explain the reasons that led it to make this decision. Some education specialists believe that the lack of importance of the high school diploma in the university admission rate is evidence of the failure of our education outputs, and this perspective may be unfair and inaccurate. Some university professors have complained about the level of students in their universities due to the weak education outputs, and we used to dismiss those voices and questions, justifying that higher education is different from general education, and that those who were weak in high school could succeed and excel, for example. However, it seems that those complaints and questions have now found justification after this decision from our strongest university. Are we going back to square one in understanding the flaws in the weakness of general education outputs? Is it due to the curricula, the teachers, or the educational environment in general? All these factors have undergone many changes and modifications, but unfortunately, the final output has not changed much. Some believe that there is a clear leniency in granting grades in high school, and we find the success rate in that stage to be significantly high and may not be accurate, as evidenced by the lack of importance of this certificate in university admission rates. Does the type of private and public schools play a role in the high success rate?
We may face a significant issue if other universities make similar decisions regarding admission rates and adopt a zero percentage for the high school diploma. Some have begun to raise many questions about the usefulness of high school education in the first place if this is its rate in university admission. I hope that this decision from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals will motivate our educational authorities to work and seek assistance from local expertise to understand the reasons for our failures in this regard. The state has not been stingy with the education sector in general, and the education budget consistently ranks high in the overall state budget each year, in addition to incorporating modern sciences and subjects into educational curricula that achieve the desired goals for graduates and meet the needs of most specializations in the market and for the state in general.
