Saudi tourism is witnessing rapid growth, and with the diversity of destinations and seasons, there is a pressing need to motivate cities and tourist sites to compete in the quality of services, not just in the density of advertisements. Hence, the idea of launching an annual award for the best city and best tourist site in the Kingdom comes into play.
The award can be seasonal, with cities like Abha, Taif, Al-Baha, and Asir provinces competing in the summer, while Riyadh, Jeddah, the Eastern Province, and Jazan compete in the winter, in addition to the winter destinations in Asir, such as Muhayil Asir and the coastal sites, depending on the nature of the season and visitor traffic.
The selection of the winning city should not rely solely on the number of tourists but rather on a comprehensive evaluation system that includes visitor density, their satisfaction, the quality of services, the level and classifications of hotels and their prices, accessibility, smooth traffic flow, availability of parking, cleanliness, and the diversity of activities.
Conversely, a separate award should be designated for the best tourist site, whether it is a park, a waterfront, a tourist village, a mountain resort, or a heritage site. The evaluation will be based on visitor opinions and electronic surveys through the Ministry of Tourism's website, in addition to announced and secret tours in collaboration with regional development authorities.
The criteria include the cleanliness of the site, restrooms, mosques, the quality of restaurants and cafes, shops, the safety of facilities, the clarity of signage, ease of access, services for the elderly and people with disabilities, as well as pricing and the courteousness of staff.
The problem is that some sites start with beautiful appearances and distinctive services, only to decline after gaining fame and popularity, leading to a deterioration in cleanliness, maintenance, and quality due to a lack of continuous oversight.
Such awards will not merely be trophies and certificates but will serve as a regulatory and motivational tool that raises the level of services and enhances competition among cities and tourist sites.
To enhance the value of competition, results will be announced at the end of each tourist season, and awards will be presented by the Ministry of Tourism, in the presence of relevant authorities and investors, which grants it official value and makes it an incentive to improve services year after year.
In the end, tourism does not succeed merely by opening sites but by maintaining and developing them. The real competition begins when every official and investor understands that visitors evaluate, and that quality is what determines the winner and achieves sustainability.
