I don’t know how many Saudis spent their summer vacation outside the Kingdom this year; I don’t have statistics at the moment, but surely there are many who traveled to countries around the world, both east and west. International tourism is a way of life for all peoples, even in countries that have all the attractions. Its purpose is to temporarily change one’s lifestyle and distance oneself from the usual place and environment in which a person lives, as well as to discover new knowledge about different cultures. Countries that witness a surge in tourists during the summer see their citizens traveling to other countries; Switzerland, for example, is a land of tranquility and enchanting nature that attracts vacationers, yet its citizens travel in the summer to other countries that are less naturally beautiful and much hotter. This applies to many residents of countries classified among the most visited in tourism.
For us as Saudis, the purpose of vacationing previously, that is, before the significant change in our lifestyle brought about by Vision 2030, was greater than merely escaping the summer heat and changing locations. Saudis, both individuals and families, used to travel for entertainment, attending parties, going to cinemas, and visiting amusement parks, sitting together in restaurants naturally without worry, and shopping in commercial markets without separating men from women and being apprehensive about the eyes of moral guardians and overseers of human behavior.
Now everything has changed for us. Life goes on normally, and we have many attractions for tourism as an option for those who do not want to travel. However, the problem is that we promote it through comparisons. When we talk about beach resorts, we compare them to the Maldives or Seychelles or the Caribbean islands. When we talk about green mountain resorts with a moderate climate, we recall comparisons with Swiss resorts. When we praise our beaches, we inevitably compare them to the beaches of southern France or Italy, and so on, despite the significant difference in the depth of the tourism industry experience and its details. People do not go to places that resemble what they are familiar with; they want something different. When I am a citizen in the Maldives and you tell me that the Red Sea Project, for example, is the Maldives of Saudi Arabia, I will not be excited to visit it because I want something different. Therefore, the strategy for promoting our local tourism must change. As for the local tourist, they are also looking for a comprehensive tourism system in any tourist location. Tourism involves many details that the tourist considers, and it is not just about the place. Services, prices, facilities, appropriate entertainment and recreation, and exciting experiences derived from local culture—not merely replicating the traditional experiences known abroad—are factors that must be taken into account to develop competitive local tourism.
In any case, we are still at the beginning of the tourism industry, and what has been achieved is good, but we aspire for domestic tourism to be a competitive option, not out of national sentiment but for convincing objective reasons.
