In the West, scholars have specialized in studying the motivations of Islamist terrorist groups, and the most shocking finding is that the primary common factor among these Islamist terrorist groups is their complete reliance on dream visions in their decisions. In the sermons broadcast by Juhayman inside the Grand Mosque during his siege and in his messages, he mentioned by name two members of the group who collected 50 visions claiming that his son-in-law was the Mahdi. His son-in-law did not believe he was the Mahdi despite Juhayman's insistence due to a dream he had. His son-in-law performed a prayer for guidance and claimed to have seen a vision that made him believe he was the Mahdi. Those who split from his group, such as "Mutawalli Saleh" and "Nasser al-Hazimi," confirmed that dreams were the driving force for Juhayman. The American terrorist who converted to Islam, "Elton Simpson," saw a dream of "a veiled woman looking at him on the road" and sought its interpretation from Islamists online, who told him it meant he was divinely commanded to carry out a suicide operation, which he did because of the dream. Due to terrorists' reliance on dreams, experts suggested monitoring their online sharing of dreams for interpretation as a means of predicting their involvement in terrorist operations. The phenomenon of dreams that reinforce the tendencies of terrorists is not different from the dreams of someone who spends all day engrossed in a video game, seeing its events in their sleep. Al-Zarqawi, the founder of ISIS, was driven from crime and drugs to terrorism by a dream his sister had, where she saw a sword coming from the sky with the inscription "Your Lord has not forsaken you, nor has He become displeased." He misinterpreted it as a command for him to engage in terrorism. In recordings presented by the American media and found in Osama bin Laden's hideout, he spoke to his visitors about how dreams before the September 11 attacks encouraged him. The American intelligence published bin Laden's memos, known as the "Abbottabad documents," which revealed his reliance on dream visions in his decisions and his belief that he was "the Yemeni Qatari" who would pave the way for the Mahdi due to a dream. Al-Qaeda's cleric, "Abu Hafs al-Mauritani," stated that bin Laden ultimately believed he was "the Mahdi" due to a dream, and this was the motivation behind his operations.
The International Center for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) in the Netherlands conducted a study on the dreams published by ISIS in its official magazine "Dabiq." In issue 14, they published dreams that they claimed were the reason for the attacks in Brussels and Paris. Dr. Iain Edgar, an anthropologist specializing in studies on the primary role of dreams in the decision-making of Islamist terrorists, has written books on the subject. He documented that Mullah Omar declared himself a ruler due to a vision in which he wore the Prophet's (peace be upon him) cloak. After the defeat of the Taliban in 2001, he waited for a dream to guide him on what to do for a whole year, until his deputy, whose job was to see dreams and was titled "Malik al-Ra'i," saw Mullah Omar's beard turning white from the threads of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) cloak, interpreting it as a command to fight. Kenneth Ballen, a federal judicial official and head of a specialized agency for terrorism studies, also documented these events. He had an incident where he saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) in a dream, and when he told a Taliban official about his dream, the official began to shout "Allahu Akbar." He said, "I saw the dream I have waited for my whole life; you are American and Jewish, I saw the Prophet Muhammad." His experience led to a complete transformation; after speaking about fighting non-Muslims, he began quoting verses about tolerance towards non-Muslims and renounced violence. His conviction in violence changed with one dream. Dr. Thomas Hegghammer's study confirmed the centrality of dreams as a motivation for Islamist terrorists. "Jaber Rajabi," a friend of Iranian leader Mojtaba Khamenei, said that Mojtaba relies on dreams and saw himself as "the Khurasani" mentioned in the mythical prophecies of the end times, which is the reason for his aggressive policies. Therefore, there is a need for awareness that dreams are not revelations, and their interpretations are often incorrect, stemming from the devil and the thoughts/concerns/wishes of the self, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said. There is a need to guide religious culture towards a rational direction instead of the prevailing irrational direction that bases its decisions on dreams.
For the record, the main motivation for Europeans joining the Crusades was seeing dreams commanding them to do so.
