We live to a rhythm, even if we don't always pay attention to it. The heartbeat is a rhythm, breathing is a rhythm, sleeping and waking are rhythms, and the succession of night and day, the seasons, and the movement of tides are different forms of a system that fundamentally relies on repetition, regularity, and timing.
Therefore, the concept of rhythm is not limited to music alone.
In biology, the biological clock regulates many bodily functions, and in our daily lives, we create our own rhythms from work, meal, sleep, and rest schedules.
When this system is disrupted, its effects are evident on activity, concentration, mood, and quality of life.
Music provides the clearest picture of this concept; rhythm in music is organization, defining the movement, speed, and sequence of melodies. To the listener, it may seem that the rhythmic element plays a supportive role to the singer and melody, while in reality, it is one of the elements that maintains the cohesion of the work and provides the other musicians with a shared temporal ground.
The percussionist Suleiman Al-Bitar, for example, exemplifies this profession that often works away from the spotlight, despite its significant presence on stage. He has collaborated with major names in Arabic music, including Mohammed Abdu, Abdul Majid Abdullah, Majid Al-Muhandis, Oumima Taleb, and Abadi Al-Johar.
The work of a percussionist does not rely on continuous striking of the instrument as some might imagine, but rather on a precise understanding of musical time, speed, meter, entry and stopping points, and the ability to interact with the singer and musicians and adapt to live performance changes.
Interestingly, the role of the percussionist somewhat resembles the role of rhythm in our lives. Regularity does not mean boring repetition, but rather distributing movement and stillness in a way that maintains balance.
From the precision of the heartbeat to the precision of the percussionist, the idea seems the same: every life has a meter, every music has a time, and the disruption begins when we lose the rhythm.
