The Houthis did not engage in their battle with weapons alone; they also fought it through narratives that have been established locally and internationally since their coup in 2014, using the tools of the Iranian regime. During the early years of the conflict, some of these narratives succeeded in influencing public opinion and creating a degree of confusion about the reality of what is happening in Yemen. However, as events evolved and facts accumulated, an important question arises: Are these myths still sellable to the minds of Yemenis and the international community? Or have the Houthi myths collapsed one after another? And what are those myths?
The Myth of the Siege: The Houthis promoted the narrative of a siege on Sanaa Airport and the port of Hodeidah, but the facts have dismantled this narrative. The Jordanian initiative to resume flights to Sanaa Airport revealed that the problem was not a ban on the airport as much as it was the Houthis' rejection of the proposed solutions. Documented figures show that more than 400 ships have entered the port of Hodeidah since the beginning of 2026, carrying various needs for Yemenis, which practically refutes claims of a siege on the port.
The repetition of this narrative no longer convinces many; rather, its weakness has increased after the Houthis circumvented the Jordanian initiative, reinforcing the impression that the priority was not to facilitate the movement of Yemenis, but to maintain an air bridge with Iran, a goal that does not serve the interests of the Yemeni people.
The Myth of Aggression: For a long time, the Houthis relied on the lack of awareness about the situation in Yemen and the low level of international interest in it. This ignorance, which led to the marketing of Houthi lies, no longer exists today. In the face of the Houthi threat to international navigation, the world has understood the situation better, and everyone is now convinced and aware of the terrorist nature of the Houthi militia.
Moreover, the narrative of aggression that the Houthis promoted for years has collapsed when they chose in recent weeks to respond to de-escalation with escalation, and to counter regional and international peace efforts with more military actions, culminating in targeting navigation in the Red Sea and threatening international trade. These practices revealed that the Houthis do not act as a party seeking to end the war or facing aggression, but rather as a group deliberately expanding the circle of conflict and threatening regional and international security, which has stripped this narrative of credibility in front of the international community.
The Myth of Independence from Iran: It has been widely promoted that the Houthis are different from Hezbollah and the factions in Iraq, enjoying greater independence, and that a pragmatic and rational thought governs their movements. A significant question has begun to circulate in international circles: Why did the Houthis not participate in the war with Iran when the American attacks began? Supporters of the Houthis tried to promote the idea of rationality among the Houthis and their desire to spare Yemen from conflict as an answer to that question.
It is now clear, especially with the changes in recent weeks, that the rational, pragmatic Houthi is merely a myth. The correct answer to the question regarding their participation in the war is the Iranian view of the Houthis as a powerful card, and their view of the Bab al-Mandab Strait as an influential international weapon, at a time determined by Tehran.
The Iranian regime, known for its long-term vision, has kept the Houthis as a strong card for the most difficult phase. With the recent American strikes, which undoubtedly were exceptionally painful for Iran, the time has come for the Houthis to play the role required of them by Iran. We found them escalating militarily against Yemen and against the countries of the region. What is even more indicative of their implementation of Iran's objectives is that their first steps for escalation were not directed anywhere except towards the western coast and attacking navigation in the Bab al-Mandab Strait. It is obvious that this trajectory is difficult to explain in terms of internal Yemeni considerations, while it clearly aligns with Iranian strategic interests.
The Houthis are an agent of the Iranian regime in a sensitive strategic position, thus posing an international and regional security challenge, not just a local one, and a continuous threat rather than a temporary one, becoming more dangerous and influential with each round of violence they can evade punishment.
The Myth of Hostility Among Brothers: One of the most dangerous things the Houthis have tried to promote is the false claim regarding Saudi Arabia's targeting of Yemen. These claims deeply undermine the values of brotherhood, Arabism, and neighborliness, representing a narrow and racist mindset that reduces all of Yemen to the person of the Houthi. In doing so, they attempt to negatively impact the strong and historically deep relationships between the peoples of the two countries, and more importantly, they represent the opposite of the vital and strong relationship between the two countries.
At a time when Yemen, both government and people, relies on sisterly Saudi Arabia in various circumstances, and at a time when the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia stands with Yemen at all political, humanitarian, and economic levels, the Houthis attempt to pose a threat to their brothers in Saudi Arabia recklessly and aggressively, endangering the interests of the Yemeni people and their relationships with their neighbors and brothers.
The Houthi's aggressive attempts against their brothers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reflect a mentality of extortion and recklessness, and the Kingdom's handling of this recklessness reflects responsibility and care for the relationships with the people of Yemen and their government. The response to Saudi efforts for de-escalation with further escalation confirms that the Houthis see in Yemen only themselves and their own interests. The statements from the brothers in the Kingdom and in the Coalition to Support Legitimacy were clear in their proportional military response, which did not target the vital interests of the Yemeni people.
The Houthi myths are many; however, they crumble before the logic of the Yemeni state in defending its sovereignty and the interests of its people, and before the positions and efforts made by the brothers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The Houthis will continue to seek those who believe their narratives and myths, but a conscious believer is not deceived or misled from the same hole twice. If we are deceived once, that is a disgrace to him; but if we are deceived a second time, that is a disgrace to us.
