In recent days, the most prominent global event, which has garnered media coverage comparable to the negotiations between America and Iran, is not political but economic, as the market value of SpaceX exceeded two trillion dollars. The big puzzling question that occupies people's minds, especially in our Arab world, is how can a space company that is less than 20 years old surpass the combined economies of many countries?
This question has a clear and intuitive answer in countries that recognize the value of science and scientific research, considering it a capital that generates new industries, and believe that every dollar spent on scientific research later transforms into tens of dollars, unlike countries that regard it as a marginal item in their budgets and economic cycles. SpaceX has spent about 60 billion dollars on research, development, and infrastructure since its establishment. This means that its current massive value did not originate in financial markets but was born earlier in research and development laboratories, and it knew how to transform research spending into advanced products that are now recognized as part of the new space economy, which saw global government spending reach about 138 billion in 2025.
We presented the story of this company to highlight the value and importance of scientific research in the developed world and its tragedy in our Arab world, and how neglecting it is the main reason for many of our disappointments and our scientific and technological backwardness, as well as our economic problems and the deterioration of development. In America and China, the spending on scientific research reached nearly 800 billion dollars for each country in 2024, followed by countries like Japan, Germany, and South Korea with lower but still significant spending relative to the total national expenditure shared by governments, companies, and universities, noting that the private sector contributes a significant percentage that reaches up to 70% of total spending in some countries. As for the countries that allocate the most for scientific research relative to the size of their local economies, Israel ranks first globally with a percentage of 6.8%. Yes, Israel, the small country once threatened by Arabs to be thrown into the sea, is now among the best countries in the world in scientific, medical, and technological research, which has granted it continuous strength and development. However, when examining the position of Arab countries in the world regarding scientific research and how much is spent on it, we will find a shameful and sad result, and it can be said that there is no actual place for them.
Some countries have reached the space economy by excelling in scientific research, while many others still struggle to invest their vast resources on Earth due to internal conflicts, corruption, and educational backwardness. Scientific research is the only tool guaranteed to advance any nation.
