It is well known that coach Hervé Renard has a reputation and standing in the world of coaching, and he has only previously coached a women's team once, which led him to resign from coaching the Saudi national team before the end of his contract for flimsy excuses that are unacceptable from a professional coach, ignoring another important phase that requires his presence with the Saudi national team and the potential significant losses—both financially and technically—that could result from his decision, which have already harmed both the Saudi Football Federation and the Green team.
- What prompted me to this reminder...
Was the statement made by the coach of the Iraqi national team before facing the Saudi national team at the press conference prior to the match, when he mentioned that Renard was a coach for women, justifying his goal from this statement—as he said—"to exert mental and psychological pressure on the Saudi national team players." However, the "Green men" responded to him with a "manly" performance that took them to the World Cup, as they delivered a strong match that showcased their fighting spirit and respect for their national emblem and the Saudi audience.
- Regardless of Renard's reputation and standing in the coaching world, whether for men or women, and regardless of the Saudi national team's qualification for the World Cup, which may be credited to him, I see this qualification, from a technical, physical, and fighting perspective, as a credit to the stars of the Green team who performed admirably.
- If we look at the team's victory over Indonesia 2-3 and the goalless draw against Iraq, both matches held in Saudi Arabia, and evaluate Renard's work, including what he presented in the qualifiers and his abysmal failure to qualify, we will find ourselves facing one undeniable fact: Renard is not suitable in any way to continue his contract and journey with the national team. The compelling evidence that proves this can be summarized in the following points:
1- Renard relied on a high-pressing style of play and building attacks from the back, a method that requires players with high physical fitness and quick decision-making. This method did not suit the nature of most of the selected players.
2- Renard changed the team's formation more than ten times during the qualifiers, sometimes swapping players' positions without justification, and in crucial matches (against Australia and Japan), he delayed substitutions and did not manage to deal well with the opponents' defensive block. We noticed that the team often starts well but then their performance declines in the second half due to poor rhythm management.
3- Despite the team possessing outstanding offensive elements, Renard stuck to the 4-3-3 formation with a more defensively balanced approach rather than an attacking one, which reduced the scoring rate, forcing the team to rely on goal difference for qualification.
5- Renard relied excessively on a limited group of players (especially Al-Hilal players), without sufficient rotation, which caused fatigue and a decline in performance towards the end of the qualifiers. Despite having the best players in the league, he failed to make the right selections and disastrously led the Green team to the Asian playoff.
- Therefore, it is better to look for a coach who is not only concerned with psychological aspects but also with technical and physical aspects. I believe that if it is possible to contract with coach Jesus after the end of his season with Al-Nassr, he would be the most suitable for the current period, and he is capable, with the names that emerged in the playoff, of achieving a better accomplishment for the Green team in the upcoming World Cup finals.
- To avoid any misunderstanding of my opinion among Al-Nassr fans, I would have liked to see matches of the new Al-Ittihad coach, Consesao, with the Tigers, who possesses the same personal qualities as Jesus, but he does not have the same experience in the Saudi league; otherwise, I would have demanded the same for the Al-Nassr coach.
- In conclusion, I extend my sincere congratulations to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, the Crown Prince, the Minister of Sports Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki, the President and the Board of the Saudi Football Federation, and everyone who contributed to this qualification, foremost among them the players, the administrative staff, and the Saudi audience, hoping to see a team with these distinguished elements carrying a fighting spirit and performance with a coach who possesses very high technical thinking, presenting us with a strong team in the 2026 World Cup finals, not limited to just a commendable participation, but achieving a global accomplishment that aligns with the sports renaissance and a different football phase witnessed by Saudi clubs and national teams in this prosperous era.
