زلزال في الإليزيه.. حكومة اليوم الواحد تتلاشى
France today is experiencing one of the most turbulent political moments in its modern history, following the sudden resignation of the Prime Minister and his government, which had only been formed a day earlier, on October 6, 2025. This shocking move has opened the floodgates to a deep and unprecedented political crisis. This resignation was the straw that broke the back of the fragile governing coalition and revealed the extent of the structural imbalances that have accumulated over the past months within the French political scene. From the moment the names of the new ministers were announced, a wave of sharp objections erupted from key political forces that saw the government formation as a disregard for the balances produced by the recent elections. What made the situation even more complicated was that the objections did not only come from outside but also originated from within the government itself, as the Minister of the Interior, a figure with significant political and security weight, expressed his rejection of the appointment of certain individuals to sensitive ministerial positions, considering their presence a threat to national security. This public rejection from within the government team significantly weakened the Prime Minister's position and deprived him of the ability to defend his political choices before Parliament and public opinion.
In light of this troubled scene, President Emmanuel Macron intervened to try to contain the crisis, granting the resigned Prime Minister a deadline until Wednesday to conduct urgent negotiations with various political forces in order to reach a new, more balanced government formula. However, this crisis cannot be understood in isolation from the political context that preceded it, as the primary responsibility fundamentally lies with the president himself, who made a strategic error when he decided to call for early legislative elections months ago in an attempt to rearrange the balances within Parliament to give him a wider margin for maneuvering. That was a risky step, and its results were catastrophic, leading to a more divided Parliament with weakened alliances, making the formation of any stable government a nearly impossible task. Macron has tampered with an already fragile party structure, resulting in adverse outcomes that have placed him today in an unprecedented political predicament.
Moreover, this crisis reveals a deep disconnect between the French political class and the difficult economic and social reality the country is facing. France is grappling with a crushing financial crisis, a rising public debt, and increasing pressures to adopt harsh austerity measures in order to regain the confidence of European and international markets. Yet, the political class seems preoccupied with power struggles and the division of portfolios, at a time when the economy needs radical reforms and firm management. This indifference to the economic situation warns of a worsening financial crisis and a contraction of political maneuvering margins in the near future. More dangerously, the active political parties, whether in the ruling coalition or in the opposition, lack the necessary political courage to bear their historical responsibilities. Everyone understands that saving the country requires unpopular decisions that include cutting public spending, re-evaluating social support programs, and tax reform, but no one dares to engage in this confrontation for fear of public anger or losing political positions. This collective cowardice drains the political process of its reformative content and turns successive governments into administrative entities incapable of making tough decisions.
Thus, the current crisis cannot be reduced to a government formation crisis or the failure of a Prime Minister to build a parliamentary coalition; rather, it is a crisis of a political system that has lost its internal balance, a political class living in a parallel world far removed from the real economic challenges, and a president who gambled on an electoral adventure that ended in adverse results. In the absence of the political will to undertake painful yet necessary reforms, any new government will find itself trapped by the same obstacles, and the country will continue to spiral in a vicious cycle of political and economic crises that deepen uncertainty and outline a new, more fragile and turbulent phase in the history of the Fifth Republic.
