Ricky Gervais said in the premiere of his film "The Invention of Lying": "A world without lies would be a terrible world, and a world without lies would be a world without imagination."
Our daily lives are filled with all kinds of lies, from the little white lies we tell to avoid trouble, to the web of lies that people sometimes get entangled in, leading to arguments and even physical confrontations, whether they are colleagues, partners, friends, or loved ones.
We often refer to the unreliable person who is always late and lies about it as having "the appointments of Arqoub." Do you know who Arqoub is and why his name is associated with lying and evasion among Arabs?!
This Arqoub, I am sure, is the older brother of someone I know, who is evasive and a liar, and she shares some of his traits, Subhanallah. Arqoub would lie about appointments when someone came to him asking for something.
If someone asked him about something, Arqoub would promise them it would be ready when the dates ripen, and when the dates ripen, the man would come at the appointed time, only for Arqoub to lie again with a new date, even before the dates had ripened!
When the dates ripened, the man would come and Arqoub would invent a new date, telling the poor inquirer: "When the dates bloom!"
And when the man returned when the dates bloomed, Arqoub would say: "Come back when the dates are ripe," and when the dates were ripe, he would promise him to come back when the dates bear fruit!
He would keep stalling his inquirer, lying about all his appointments and promises, giving nothing to anyone, which is why Arqoub became synonymous with lying among Arabs.
And since lying reminds one of another liar, it is not far from a man who exaggerated his speech, always lying and saying things that were not true in any gathering with his friends. This bad trait would anger people and irritate them, making them feel repulsed by his "rudeness."
One day, he wanted to cure this ugly disease, so he complained to one of his close friends, who said to him: "I will set a password between us, and I will say 'Ahem' if I notice you exaggerating in your speech, so you can pay attention immediately and refrain from exaggeration and lying." The man agreed right away.
One day, this man gathered with some people and said to them: "I have built a huge mosque that is ten thousand meters long." His friend said: "Ahem," and another man interrupted him, saying in astonishment:
"You liar! Ten thousand meters? How wide is it?!" The lying man replied: "One meter wide!"
The people were astonished and said to him: "What is this, man? Tell us why you made it so narrow while claiming it is ten thousand meters long?"
At this point, the man turned to his friend and said with great annoyance: "And now what do I do, O 'Fahlik'? May God make it narrow for those who made it narrow for us," and then he left the place, dragging his tail of disappointment and embarrassment.
I remember in the past they used to tell us: "When you lie, your nose grows long," and how many times I put my hand on my nose to feel it. But in any case, what can be learned from this article will only be understood by the wise, believe me, and in my view, the wise understands (the article).
(Ahem, Ahem)!
