I always write about the afflictions that plague our society and enable it to become heated and intolerant. The two main pillars that still dominate the Saudi mood are: tribal affiliation and sports affiliation.
In the past two days, sports fanaticism has appeared in its ugliest forms. After the match between Al-Nasr and Al-Ahli, blatant mockery emerged that warrants a review of some media content broadcast among football fans.
The fierce and scattered attacks appeared among the four competing teams for the Super Cup, as the superficiality of support has become so pronounced that one could say our audience has turned into support templates devoid of substance. This leads individuals to become confused in their support without awareness, resulting in the distribution of hatred and igniting animosity among themselves.
A fan's characteristic is enthusiasm without the sustainability of that enthusiasm after the competition ends; otherwise, enthusiasm turns into a disgraceful trait that spreads hatred among the audience, even among family members.
If we trace our actions and behaviors, we will find this fanaticism deeply ingrained in ourselves, a behavioral trait that no one denies or accuses themselves of being a fanatic supporter.
Among the corruptions that have affected a group of fans and planted hatred for a specific team in their hearts is the presenter’s style in everything, even if they were wrong or unworthy of winning, or favoring them over other clubs, or distinguishing them with their supporters, or placing them in a high status, or favoring every sports entity for that club, or oppressing other clubs and their fans by insisting on the victory of a particular club or elevating it while "trampling" on the rest... dozens of descriptions that a team or two can receive; this distinction drives some fans to dispute and exchange hatred. The first remedy to dry up sports fanaticism is to treat everyone equally, at least before businesspeople own those clubs.
It seems that any particular club that enjoys preferential advantages turns into a wound in the hearts of some fans of the other clubs, and any pain inflicted on that team transforms into joy in the hearts of the others wounded by that preference.
This distinction for a particular club includes a map of fans distributed across the clubs, feeling "aggrieved" by that distinction...
I believe that those responsible for sports in the country (recently) fully understand the danger of sports fanaticism and the tendency to give any team an advantage over the others. The sports media must instill a spirit of competition, not a spirit of animosity and conflict...
What is striking is that the influx of hatred has become multi-sourced. If broadcasters and journalists commit to not stirring up competitive tensions, whether through guidance or media awareness, what about the other sources that spread hatred and division, which come from social media? What is the means that can limit the intensity of the hatred and animosity being disseminated? I believe that the primary task of drying up sports fanaticism requires attention to these individuals, whether through guidelines to raise their awareness or through penalties that encourage them to refine their sports behavior.
