Finally, U.S. President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the U.S. state of Alaska after considerable back-and-forth and a long-awaited anticipation. President Trump welcomed his Russian guest with an undeniable warmth and friendliness, making a point to showcase the special relationship he shares with Putin by calling him by his first name, Vladimir.
The summit ended without a public agreement regarding the resolution of the war between Russia and Ukraine, which was the main declared reason for the meeting between the two presidents. However, the press conference held after their meeting was friendly, pleasant, and optimistic, showing no signs of disagreement but rather an undeniable camaraderie.
President Putin's arrival in Alaska with a delegation that included politicians, advisors, economists, and businessmen confirms that the meeting goes beyond the issue of the war with Ukraine and is related to the relationship between the United States and Russia. Trump's America is striving diligently, leveraging Trump's good relationship with Putin, to draw Russia away from the Chinese axis in order to weaken the increasingly influential dragon on the global stage. It is no secret that one of the most significant effects of the Russian-Ukrainian war is the increase in trade relations between Russia and China, reaching unprecedented levels that are now described as strategic.
It seems as if history is repeating itself, but with different protagonists. Just as happened in the 1970s when the United States lured China out of the Soviet Union's sphere of influence through the duo of former U.S. President Richard Nixon and his Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who found their ally in the third man in Chinese leadership, Deng Xiaoping, who gradually adopted the policy of opening China to a free market, leading to the birth of the giant Chinese dragon in all economic fields.
Today, the President of the United States sees an opportunity to bring the Russian bear back into the conservative Western camp, which shares a mission aimed at upholding conservative social values such as combating family disintegration, resisting the tide of sexual deviation, and supporting the role of the church in its various branches. Trump sees the possibility of achieving cooperation with Putin because he is a man who holds all the Russian decision-making power, unlike during the Soviet era when decisions were made by aging men who had become a burden on their country. For America, Russia is an important source of vast resources such as gas, oil, wheat, iron, timber, copper, gold, and other rare minerals.
Therefore, it is not surprising that China is the absent presence at the Alaska summit. The United States wishes to entice Russia to join its camp and lift economic sanctions against it, even restoring its membership in the G7 as it was in the days of former President Bill Clinton. Let’s wait and see if Donald Trump can achieve that.
