Since its establishment, Israel has consistently promoted a narrative that it lives in constant fear of its surroundings, which it claims are lurking to eliminate it from existence. This narrative attempts to imply that it is the oppressed and threatened party that aspires to nothing more than living in security and peace. Unfortunately, this narrative has deceived many societies around the world, and it has been adopted by numerous countries, especially major powers, which have provided Israel with multiples of what a state of its size needs in military, economic, and political support.
The history and events since Israel's inception prove the fallacy and falsehood of its narrative. It has not faced a direct threat from its Arab surroundings that justifies its initiation of all the major and minor wars it has conducted. It is the aggressor, and it creates justifications for itself.
Facts have shown that it is the danger to the Arab surroundings, not the other way around. It has denied accusations of its expansionist intentions based on the Promised Land that stretches from river to river. It has denied this despite many of its politicians, intellectuals, and extremist religious figures often pointing to it directly; that is, the state that claims to be oppressed and in a state of existential danger is, in reality, the one that aspires to expand and occupy the lands of others, on a much larger scale than the territories it has already occupied.
Now, at this critical time the region is experiencing, amidst intense efforts to achieve peace through a two-state solution and to realize Palestinian rights by establishing a state in accordance with international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative, Benjamin Netanyahu emerges to tell the world that he feels a spiritual duty and a sacred mission to achieve Israel's expansionist dream. He says this while his army continues to commit the most heinous acts of genocide and the ugliest forms of persecution against the people of Gaza, in scenes that the world is watching around the clock.
Is what Netanyahu said merely an escalatory maneuver in anticipation of what the world is expecting at the United Nations next September regarding the recognition of more countries of the State of Palestine and the pressure to impose a sustainable peace process? Or is it indeed, as proven by the past and present, that Israel never wants peace and is further determined to implement its expansionist plan as believed by those in decision-making and influential positions within it? This becomes clearer with time.
The matter is not as simple as Israel thinks, no matter how strong it is and how many gaps exist in its surroundings. It is pushing the tense region towards further tension, and in the end, there are established countries with their sovereignty, peoples, histories, and armies. Israel must fully realize that it will not be tolerated regarding the arrogance and reckless adventures it plans to undertake. The international community must pay serious and firm attention to prevent major fires that Israel intends to ignite.
