With the announcement of the great vision that has become the talk of the world and in the context of including sports as one of the targets, along with the Kingdom's significant steps towards artificial intelligence, I expected that the anticipated development in sports broadcasting and commentary on football matches in the Saudi league would occur. I anticipated that we would leap beyond what is available in our region, with a global company that has extensive experience and a long history in this profession taking on this task.
Instead of those wishes, which are in fact self-evident, we were surprised a few years ago by the birth of a new television broadcasting company with no noteworthy prior experience. A rigid screen that has been known since its inception for broadcasting a "sad" musical piece during broadcast interruptions or while displaying the names of advertisers.
In the past, we at least listened to a beautiful musical piece accompanied by the chants of fans that would emerge at the beginning of the transition of the broadcast outside the studios.
The reason for the good expectations was that the Public Investment Fund would intervene and bring in stars from around the world, and thus the number of followers of the Saudi football league would rise to hundreds of millions, which should have been accompanied by smart and artistic preparation for broadcasting these matches.
A global sports segment unprecedented in its management by global expertise that has a long history in maximizing this soft power and utilizing every second for this purpose. Preparation that provides millions with a unique experience in explanations and instant replays, along with a variety of camera angles, rather than making viewers wait minutes to see a replay.
Preparation and broadcasting that showcase new glimpses, even if for just a few seconds, of the distinctive landmarks of the Saudi city where the match is held, and about the amazing development in those cities.
None of this happened. The broadcasting lenses remained fixed on the green rectangle, and the director hesitated to replay mistakes and sometimes did not acknowledge the presence of the fans, nor did he even attempt to add any aesthetics from the stands to enhance the excitement of the match.
The broadcast time of the match is 90 minutes for the entire world, with hundreds of millions of viewers present, and this is happening for the first time for a Saudi channel, which is considered a great opportunity if it were taken as a soft power with the required professionalism.
I am talking about the appearance of beautiful clips that may not collectively exceed one minute in duration. What harm would it cause the broadcaster and the director if a "drone" camera were to show live footage during any match at "Al-Awwal Park," for example, of the prestigious King Saud University, of which the stadium is a small part? Or selected and direct shots of the Jeddah Corniche during any match there, or the beautiful Aja and Salma mountains in a match from Hail, or the stunning Al-Soudah heights for any match in the south of the Kingdom. When will a Saudi channel have this number of viewers?!
In the United States, where they are masters of soft power, no broadcast of any sporting event is complete without us seeing very short, but live, clips via a "drone" camera of the city where it is held, or carefully selected and amusing shots of the fans. This, of course, requires intelligence, taste, high acumen, and precise coordination between directing and presenting.
This is what originally prompted me to suggest working with giant American networks that specialize in broadcasting sports events with professionalism. Why wasn’t this part of our ambition in line with the vision and the great Saudi project?
I thought in this context, and in line with the aforementioned self-evident truths, that analytical sports programs would elevate to high artistic and critical levels, different from the trivialities of the seventies. However, in most cases, nothing of the sort happened. What occurred was nothing more than boring headlines within the "fiery episode" charged with bias and fanaticism and nausea.
I thought that sports commentary, with this leap, would transition from the old radio commentary before television—you remember the eight squares—to a different commentary style. Unfortunately, commentary still follows its old pattern, with the commentator sitting alone without any technical expert beside him, insisting on informing the viewer with excessive enthusiasm that this player passed the ball to that player, both of whom are in the middle of the field with no significant danger. The skill of the commentator, who cannot be seen on screen while speaking, even for a few seconds, let alone having his name displayed at the start of the broadcast, as if his appearance were a shame, has become measured by his ability to avoid silence for even one second, by the number of times he repeats the name of God (Allah), and by the various tones used during recordings and when opportunities are missed. We, the viewers, have been afflicted by the old "North African" school, which has been adopted by a famous sports channel for commentary, and Saudi commentators have become followers of the old followers, and I do not generalize, like "the crow that lost its way."
By the way, commentary on our matches in English is completely different, and it enriches you with its analyses during live broadcasts compared to the segments known as "refereeing cases," which have become a main segment in our programs that only appear at midnight.
There are major national initiatives that we have succeeded in achieving, such as Saudi Arabia winning the bid to host the World Cup, and what will follow from the establishment of several upcoming international stadiums with amazing designs. We have succeeded in bringing "Formula" competitions to the Kingdom and established women's sports and others. Will we cover tomorrow's calendar with this dull media image?
As for the discussion about the Football Association and its failures, which has become a boring topic, there is no need to delve into its corridors. This association, which is supposed to take the initiative on all the observations I have mentioned, has failed to achieve accomplishments for the national team, with no regional or continental championships. In the same context, I have not encountered, over several past decades, controversial cases accompanying football leagues like those caused by the confused committees of this association in recent years. Strangely, with all this unprecedented failure in the history of Saudi football, we have not heard of any member of this association resigning, which unfortunately illustrates the low level of accountability.
How did retaining the position become more important than achieving goals and successes for the nation?
Sports, in addition to being an art, entertainment, discipline, governance, and equality, is also an industry and a tremendous tool for maximizing the soft power of the entity that encompasses it. As we conclude this year's Roshan League, we all hope to wake up anew in preparation for the upcoming season, to review what has been presented and invested in for billions, and to discover areas of deficiency and failure and confront them with innovations and initiatives to make following Saudi sports an action, not just words, that is attractive and a new school different from what is happening in its region.
A Saudi school that others speak of with astonishment and admiration for the diverse leaps in coverage and production that fill the passion of the follower and keep pace with the other leaps in this nation that dazzles the world every day.
