In an incident that sparked widespread outrage among the residents of the Tunisian city of Hajeb El Ayoun, a cemetery in the city center turned into the scene of an unusual event, after a group of individuals was caught digging up graves at night, amid suspicions that they were searching for magical artifacts believed to be buried within one of them.
The Tunisian security authorities arrested five individuals, including a woman and a person suspected of practicing exorcism, after they were caught digging graves inside a cemetery in the city of Hajeb El Ayoun, which is part of the Kairouan governorate in the center of the country, while investigations continue to uncover the circumstances of the incident and determine responsibilities.
A report from a resident reveals the incident
Tunisian MP for the districts of El Ala and Hajeb El Ayoun, Walid Hajji, revealed that a resident of the city spotted a group of individuals digging graves inside the cemetery on the night between Sunday and Monday, and quickly reported it to the security forces, who intervened and arrested the five suspects.
Hajji explained, during a phone call on the "Sbah El Ward" program, that the arrested individuals are not from the area, noting that initial information links the incident to the belief of one of them that his current wife has been subjected to magical practices for years.
According to his account, the man lost his previous wife about five or six years ago, then married another, before seeking the help of a person suspected of practicing exorcism, and went with others to the cemetery in search of magic he believes is buried in one of the graves.
The roles attributed to the other detainees remain unclear so far, as does the extent of each person's involvement in the incident, pending what the investigations will reveal.
Outrage over the violation of the dead's sanctity
The incident has caused outrage among the residents of Hajeb El Ayoun, who condemned the digging up of graves, considering that what happened represents a violation of the sanctity of the dead and cemeteries, and are demanding to uncover the circumstances of the incident and hold those responsible accountable.
For his part, Hajji called for waiting for the results of the security and judicial investigations before concluding details about the case, emphasizing the necessity of respecting the sanctity of burial sites, and warning of the dangers of practices associated with beliefs in magic and sorcery.
The MP pointed out that the area has witnessed similar incidents in the past, while the relevant authorities continue their investigations to determine the full motives behind the incident and reveal the truth of what occurred inside the cemetery.
