The earthquake occurred at 10:33 PM local time, and the China Earthquake Networks Center identified its epicenter in a high-altitude area belonging to Nagqu City, at a depth of about 10 kilometers below the surface.
Located hundreds of kilometers from Lhasa
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the earthquake is approximately 191 kilometers east-northeast of Nagqu and more than 300 kilometers north of the regional capital, Lhasa, estimating its depth at about 18 kilometers.
Residents in surrounding areas felt the tremor, while the earthquake's epicenter is situated in a high and sparsely populated region, with an average elevation of about 4864 meters above sea level.
No reported losses so far
As of the time of writing, Chinese authorities have not announced any toll of injuries, fatalities, or material damage, while relevant agencies continue to assess the situation in areas near the earthquake's epicenter.
This earthquake is one of the strongest tremors to hit China in recent years, in a region known for its seismic activity due to the nature of the Tibetan Plateau and the faults extending within it.
