Four people were killed and 22 others were injured in a bus overturning accident that occurred on Wednesday at the entrance of the rural community of Takounit in the Zagora region of southeastern Morocco, in an incident that prompted the mobilization of rescue teams and local authorities.
According to the Moroccan newspaper "Hespress," the bus was carrying 26 passengers on a trip between cities in the southeastern region before it overturned, resulting in four fatalities at the scene of the accident, along with varying degrees of injuries among the remaining passengers.
The newspaper quoted local sources as saying that some of the injured are suffering from severe injuries, which necessitated urgent intervention from civil protection personnel and local authorities to transport the injured and provide necessary assistance. The sources did not rule out an increase in the number of fatalities in light of the health condition of some of the injured.
In the aftermath of the accident, security authorities began their investigations to determine the causes and circumstances surrounding the incident, while also organizing traffic in the vicinity of the site, after the area experienced congestion due to the accident.
According to "Hespress," the initial hypotheses include the possibility that the driver lost control of the bus, either due to speeding or a mechanical failure, while the final causes remain dependent on the investigation results.
Traffic accidents occur frequently in various regions of Morocco, resulting in fatalities and injuries, with the reasons cited by official authorities including excessive speed, driver inattention, failure to respect right of way, loss of control of vehicles, as well as not maintaining a safe distance or driving in the opposite direction.
