After surviving a failed execution attempt in the state of Tennessee, Krista Pike's attorney revealed her first words after regaining consciousness, in a moment that captured the attention of the American public after days of awaiting her health status.
Randy Spivey stated during a press conference outside the courthouse on October 7 that his client asked as soon as she woke up: “Where am I and who are you?” He explained that she was experiencing significant mental confusion after spending several days on a ventilator in the hospital. He added that Pike wanted to know what had happened and asked questions about individuals connected to her case, including members of her legal team and the victim's family, noting that she appeared angry and confused about what had transpired.
Doctors had believed on October 5 that Krista was suffering from brain death and were preparing to remove her life support the following day, before she unexpectedly regained consciousness and began speaking on Tuesday morning, a development that doctors described as unforeseen.
Pike faces a long road to recovery, according to her attorney, after suffering a blood clot in her arm and pneumonia. She had been injected with two doses of pentobarbital at Riverbend prison in Nashville on September 30, in execution of her death sentence for the murder of Colin Slimmer, but she survived the attempt.
Following the failed execution attempts of Krista Pike and Tony Carruthers this year, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced a suspension of the remaining death sentences through 2026 to conduct an external review of the execution procedures in the state. Authorities are still holding Pike in the hospital, and the state has not disclosed whether it will seek to carry out the sentence again. Anesthesiologist Joel Zevot stated that it is too early to determine the course of her recovery, although her current responsiveness is a positive sign.
