When the obsession with quick wealth mixes with charlatanism and the sorcery of treasure hunting, families become a stage for terrifying crimes. This is exactly what the details of a shocking Jordanian case from Karak revealed, where a family's madness reached the point of planning to offer their son as a "human sacrifice" to extract gold, before the conflict erupted and reached the courts.
The behind-the-scenes of the tragedy began when the husband and two daughters slipped into the swamp of searching for buried gold, aided by fictitious individuals who posed as "sheikhs" for spiritual healing and treasure extraction.
But the disaster reached its peak when the charlatans convinced the family that the land would not reveal its treasure unless a bloody condition was met, involving a human sacrifice represented by the son of the complainant and his wife! When the mother stood in shock, refusing this heinous crime, her family members did not hesitate to threaten her and expel her from her home, forcing her to flee and seek the law to save whatever could be saved from her family.
In the courts of Karak, the controversial case files opened to investigate multiple charges including threats, identity theft, and the charge of "communicating with spirits" related to acts of charlatanism.
However, the court's ruling shocked observers from a purely legal perspective, as the Jordanian Court of Appeals found, after scrutinizing the evidence, that while the documents proved the defendants' involvement in searching for gold and using methods of sorcery, the evidence did not legally rise to establish the elements of the crime of "communicating with spirits" in the precise legal sense, due to the lack of proof that they received specific payments for those actions or practiced divination in ways that would warrant criminal penalties.
Accordingly, the court ruled to uphold the acquittal from the charge of communicating with spirits, drawing the curtain on one of the strangest and most terrifying cases of charlatanism and treasure hunting witnessed in the halls of Jordanian courts.
