The bite of a stray dog turned into a tragedy that ended the life of the Egyptian girl, Makkah El-Sayed Awad, who was 7 years old, about a month and a half after she was bitten in Port Said. Her health deteriorated, and symptoms emerged that raised suspicion of rabies, before she fell into a complete coma and passed away inside Al-Salam Hospital, according to her family.
About a month and a half after being bitten in the Emirati neighborhood of Port Said, the girl's health suddenly deteriorated, and symptoms emerged that raised suspicion of rabies, before she fell into a complete coma inside Al-Salam Hospital in Port Said and passed away on Friday morning, according to her family.
A bite that did not seem serious at first
The story began about a month and a half ago when Makkah, a second-grade student, was bitten by a stray dog while she was in the Emirati neighborhood of Port Said.
According to her family's account, the injury occurred on the foot above the shoe she was wearing, and the dog's teeth did not penetrate deeply into her foot, which made the incident seem less serious at first, before things developed in a way that the family did not expect.
After weeks passed, Makkah's health began to deteriorate, with concerning symptoms emerging, including a high fever, abdominal pain, and changes in her general condition, before the symptoms worsened further.
Concerning symptoms followed by coma
According to what the family announced, doctors suspected the girl was infected with rabies, leading her to enter a critical health stage.
The family mentioned that Makkah exhibited other symptoms, including involuntary urination and convulsions when attempting to drink water, before she lost consciousness and awareness of her surroundings, entering a complete coma.
The girl was transferred to Al-Salam Hospital in Port Said, where she was placed on medical devices, while attempts were made to manage her critical condition and provide the necessary care.
Appeals to save Makkah
As her daughter's condition worsened, Makkah's family launched appeals and cries for help to provide the necessary medical resources, calling for the intervention of specialized fields, including pediatric neurology, and conducting specialized tests, or transferring her to a medical center with the necessary capabilities to handle her condition.
The family remained suspended between hope and fear during the girl's treatment period, before the most devastating news came, announcing her death on Friday morning after days of being in a complete coma.
What is the truth about Makkah's rabies infection?
It is noteworthy that the girl's death came after suspicion of rabies infection following her being bitten by a stray dog, according to her family's account.
Why is rabies a significant danger?
Rabies is a dangerous viral disease that is often transmitted to humans through the saliva of the infected animal, and dogs are responsible for about 99% of human rabies cases, according to the World Health Organization.
Some cases begin with general symptoms such as fever, weakness, and headache, and an unusual sensation of pain, tingling, or itching at the bite site may appear. Once the virus reaches the central nervous system and clinical symptoms emerge, the disease becomes fatal in almost all cases.
However, rabies can be prevented if exposure is addressed urgently before symptoms appear.
What to do after a dog bite?
The World Health Organization emphasizes the need to wash the bite or scratch site immediately with soap and water for at least 15 minutes, then quickly go to a health facility to assess the level of exposure and determine the need for vaccination and rabies immune globulin or monoclonal antibodies, depending on the case.
Preventive measures after exposure vary based on the nature of the injury; some cases of scratches or bites require immediate vaccination, while bites that penetrate the skin or where saliva reaches broken skin or mucous membranes require vaccination along with immune globulin or appropriate alternative treatment based on the doctor's assessment.
A tragedy that brings the issue of stray dogs back to the forefront
Makkah's death has once again highlighted the dangers of stray dogs, especially to children who may not have the ability to assess the risks of approaching or interacting with unfamiliar animals.
The story of the little girl, which began with what seemed like a simple bite, turned into a tragedy that left her family facing the loss of their daughter, while the incident reopened the discussion about the importance of prompt action in bite cases, the necessity of raising awareness about the dangers of rabies, and addressing the phenomenon of stray dogs to protect the community, especially children, from their dangers.
