A reckless digital prank has led to severe legal consequences, as a Malaysian young man now faces the specter of imprisonment for up to three years in Singapore. The reason is nothing more than a fake image of a crocodile generated by artificial intelligence, which triggered a widespread security alert that resulted in the closure of one of the largest water reservoirs in the country.
The details of the case trace back to a digital image sent by the young man, Yee Lin (30 years old), to a colleague, showing a saltwater crocodile. The image was entirely generated using the AI model "Gemini." The picture appeared extremely realistic, depicting the crocodile as if it were lurking in the waters of "Pandang Reservoir," a vital water body with a vast area of 435 acres in the western residential area of Singapore.
After a series of information exchanges, the image reached officials at the national water agency. According to a BBC report, the authorities treated the report with absolute seriousness due to the critical nature of the site.
The false report caused an official emergency, as the reservoir was completely closed, and officials from the water agency and national park staff spread out in their boats to scour the water body for the imaginary crocodile. Sports unions and water activities, such as the Singapore Kayaking Federation, were also forced to suspend all their operations.
After thorough technical examinations, it was revealed that the image was merely AI-generated content, leading to a massive drain on public resources and disruption of vital facilities.
The charges against "Yee" were not limited to sending a false message and imposing a fine of about $8,000; the authorities also filed an additional charge of "obstructing the course of justice," as he faces the possibility of three years in prison after he deleted the image from his mobile phone in an attempt to erase evidence. In light of these developments, media reports indicated that the accused admitted in court to his intention to plead guilty.
