As soon as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's move to Britain entered its first phase, the issue of the family's security returned to the forefront, following the change of their children's school just a few days after the start of the school year, amid security concerns related to the daily commute.
According to media reports, Meghan Markle's personal phone number was leaked after a screenshot of a private conversation via WhatsApp among the school's parents circulated, featuring welcome messages to the Duchess and her responses. This coincided with the transfer of Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to another school, after the family's security team assessed the daily commuting arrangements.
A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan confirmed that the decision to change schools was made after discussing the practical aspects related to security arrangements, denying that the decision was linked to any negative feedback regarding the school's administration or staff.
According to ITV News, the security concerns included the length of time the car spent in traffic, the repetition of the same route daily, along with an incident where the security vehicle separated from the family car due to traffic. The report explained that these factors prompted the protection team to reassess the commuting arrangements and choose an alternative school.
These developments coincided with a new review of Harry and Meghan's protection arrangements in Britain. According to ITV News, the executive committee for the protection of royal family members and public figures, "RAVEC," decided to conduct a risk assessment for the couple, in light of their permanent residence in the UK and the start of their children's education there. This is the first official risk assessment for Meghan since the couple left royal life in 2020, while a recent assessment for Harry was conducted last July, before the family's final move to Britain was known.
The level of official protection granted to the family remains a topic of discussion, as reports indicated that the current arrangements do not include permanent police protection, while the family has private security alongside a means of communication with a liaison officer in the police. The family's return to Britain has raised renewed questions about the nature of the protection that should be provided to them, especially with the children moving to a British school.
In contrast, reactions circulating on social media regarding the level of risks facing the family varied, with some commentators viewing the phone number leak as something that could be managed with simple measures, while others considered that the recent developments reflect the need to reassess security arrangements in light of the family's permanent residence in Britain.
