أعلن المركز الأوروبي للوقاية من الأمراض والسيطرة عليها تسجيل 1086 إصابة بفايروس غرب النيل مكتسبة محلياً في 15 دولة أوروبية، منذ بدء موسم انتقال العدوى هذا العام وحتى 3 سبتمبر.
وأوضح المركز، في أحدث تحديث أسبوعي صدر الجمعة، أن أعداد الإصابات ارتفعت بشكل ملحوظ خلال الأسابيع الأخيرة، بعدما كانت قد بلغت نحو 240 حالة فقط في سبع دول مطلع أغسطس.
وتصدرت إيطاليا قائمة الدول الأكثر تسجيلاً للإصابات بـ516 حالة، تلتها اليونان بـ284 حالة، ثم إسبانيا بـ88 حالة.
وبلغ إجمالي المناطق الأوروبية التي رُصدت فيها إصابات 144 منطقة، بينها 62 منطقة في إيطاليا.
وحذر المركز من أن الأرقام المعلنة قد لا تعكس بصورة كاملة حجم انتشار الفايروس وانتقال العدوى في أوروبا.
ينتقل فايروس غرب النيل بشكل رئيسي عبر البعوض الذي يلتقط الفايروس من الطيور البرية المصابة، ويمكن للبعوض المصاب بعد ذلك نقل العدوى إلى الإنسان.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control announced the registration of 1,086 locally acquired West Nile virus infections in 15 European countries since the start of the transmission season this year until September 3.
The Centre explained in its latest weekly update released on Friday that the number of infections has risen significantly in recent weeks, after it had reached only about 240 cases in seven countries at the beginning of August.
Italy topped the list of countries with the most recorded infections with 516 cases, followed by Greece with 284 cases, and then Spain with 88 cases.
The total number of European areas where infections have been reported is 144, including 62 areas in Italy.
The Centre warned that the announced figures may not fully reflect the extent of the virus's spread and transmission in Europe.
The West Nile virus is primarily transmitted by mosquitoes that acquire the virus from infected wild birds, and infected mosquitoes can then transmit the infection to humans.
