حذرت نيبال والصين اليوم من خطر حدوث فيضانات جديدة في جبال الهيمالايا، حيث تهدد بحيرتان تشكلتا على جانبي الحدود بين البلدين باجتياح منطقة لا تزال تعاني من آثار فيضان كارثي وقعت هذا الأسبوع.
وأصدرت هيئة إدارة الكوارث في نيبال اليوم تحذيرًا يفيد بأن منسوب بحيرة تشكلت نتيجة تراكم الحطام الذي سد مجرى نهر في موقع الفيضانات آخذ في الارتفاع ويواجه خطر تدفق المياه على نحو مفاجئ.
وقالت الهيئة «ندعو سكان المناطق الواقعة على الضفاف السفلى... والركاب والفرق المشاركة في عمليات الإنقاذ وجميع الجهات المعنية إلى توخي الحذر الشديد والبقاء في أماكن آمنة بعيدًا عن ضفاف النهر والمناطق الخطرة».
وتتوقع الصين أن تتدفق ثلاثة ملايين متر مكعب من المياه، بما يعادل نحو 1200 حوض سباحة أولمبي، إلى بحيرة سد على جانبها من الحدود خلال الأيام الثلاثة القادمة، مما يشكل خطرًا كبيرًا بحدوث انهيار، مع توقع بلوغ التدفق ذروته قرابة أول سبتمبر.
Nepal and China warned today of the risk of new floods in the Himalayas, as two lakes formed on either side of the border between the two countries threaten to inundate an area still suffering from the effects of a catastrophic flood that occurred this week.
The Nepal Disaster Management Authority issued a warning today stating that the water level of a lake formed due to debris accumulation blocking the river's course at the flood site is rising and faces the risk of sudden overflow.
The authority said, "We urge residents in the lower bank areas... and passengers and teams involved in rescue operations and all concerned parties to exercise extreme caution and remain in safe places away from the riverbanks and hazardous areas."
China expects that three million cubic meters of water, equivalent to about 1,200 Olympic-sized swimming pools, will flow into a reservoir on its side of the border over the next three days, posing a significant risk of collapse, with the flow expected to peak around September 1.
