ارتفعت حصيلة ضحايا غرق عبّارة في بحيرة كاريبا في زيمبابوي إلى 80 شخصاً، بعدما أعلنت الشرطة في زيمبابوي اليوم انتشال جثامين 8 أشخاص.
وانقلبت العبّارة المكتظة بالركاب، التي تديرها وكالة تطوير البنية التحتية الريفية الحكومية (الثلاثاء)؛ بسبب تقلبات الأحوال الجوية واضطراب المياه في بحيرة كاريبا الشاسعة الواقعة على الحدود مع زامبيا.
ارتفاع الضحايا
وأفادت شرطة زيمبابوي في بيان بأن حصيلة ضحايا حادثة العبّارة في كاريبا ارتفعت إلى 80 شخصاً بعد انتشال 8 جثث إضافية اليوم، في حين لم تُقدّم تفاصيل عن الضحايا.
وكانت فرق البحث انتشلت 25 جثة (السبت)، لترتفع الحصيلة إلى 72 شخصاً.
ومع انتشال جثامين 80 ضحية، وفق ما أعلنت الشرطة، يرتفع عدد الأشخاص الذين كانوا على متن العبّارة إلى 157.
حمولة أكثر من طاقتها
وكانت التحقيقات الأولية قد كشفت في وقت سابق أن العبّارة حملت أكثر من طاقتها الاستيعابية عندما انقلبت وسط رياح عاتية في بحيرة «كاريبا».
ولفتت الشرطة إلى أنه جرى نقل الركاب الذين تم إنقاذهم إلى مدرسة ابتدائية لتلقي الرعاية الطبية.
وكانت سلطات زيمبابوي أعلنت بعد الحادثة أنه جرى انتشال العديد من القتلى، منوهة إلى وجود العشرات الآخرين في عداد المفقودين.
The death toll from the sinking of a ferry in Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, has risen to 80 people, after the police in Zimbabwe announced today the recovery of the bodies of 8 individuals.
The overcrowded ferry, operated by the government’s Rural Infrastructure Development Agency, capsized (on Tuesday) due to weather fluctuations and turbulent waters in the vast Lake Kariba, located on the border with Zambia.
Increase in Casualties
The Zimbabwean police stated in a statement that the death toll from the ferry incident in Kariba has risen to 80 people after the recovery of 8 additional bodies today, while no details about the victims were provided.
Search teams had recovered 25 bodies (on Saturday), raising the toll to 72 people.
With the recovery of the bodies of 80 victims, according to the police announcement, the number of people who were on board the ferry rises to 157.
Overloaded Beyond Capacity
Preliminary investigations had previously revealed that the ferry was overloaded when it capsized amid strong winds in Lake Kariba.
The police noted that the rescued passengers were taken to a primary school for medical care.
The authorities in Zimbabwe announced after the incident that many bodies had been recovered, noting that dozens of others were still missing.
