The mayor of Montichiari, northern Italy, is conducting an intensive search for a giant lizard of the "Papuan dragon" type, after it was spotted near a farm in the Lombardy countryside, more than 13,000 kilometers away from its native habitat in Papua New Guinea, according to the "Independent" newspaper.
The Italian authorities are taking the appearance of the lizard seriously, after Montichiari Mayor Marco Tonini confirmed that the matter is no joke, warning that it could pose a real danger to the local population and authorities. This has led to restrictions on pedestrian movement in the area, along with mobilizing extensive resources to locate the animal that was first seen near the farm.
The repercussions of the incident have not been limited to field searches; the chase has turned into a source of continuous media pressure on the local administration. Tonini stated that newspapers, television channels, and media outlets have been in contact with him throughout the day for updates, while he urged anyone who finds the lizard, if it is dead, to place it in a visible spot by the roadside so that authorities can conclude the search and close the case.
According to "Il Giorno Brescia," authorities are working to gather as many reports and information about the lizard as possible, confirming that finding it will not expose the person reporting it to any legal repercussions. This comes at a time when Italian law prohibits the possession of reptiles from the "Varanidae" family or killing them, except in cases of self-defense.
Search teams are using advanced means to track the animal, including drones and specialized traps, as well as thermal imaging cameras and night vision technology. Researchers hope to take advantage of the thermal difference resulting from the warmth of the lizard's body, as it is a cold-blooded animal that relies on sunlight to regulate its body temperature.
The lizard being sought by authorities is about 1.5 meters long and has been spotted three times over the past two weeks, yet search teams have not yet been able to pinpoint its location definitively. The incident has garnered widespread attention from both Italian and international media, including "RAI" and "Mediaset," which are closely following the developments of the chase.
The "Papuan dragon" is also known as the "crocodile dragon," a lizard with strong physical capabilities and aggressive behavior when approached. The "Encyclopedia Britannica" describes it as the third most dangerous lizard in the world, characterized by a round head, long sharp teeth, and curved claws, and it can grow to about 2.5 meters in length.
This species lives in swamps and rainforests in southeastern New Guinea, feeding on small mammals, birds, and smaller reptiles. It also faces threats related to poaching and is protected under the CITES agreement, which regulates international trade in endangered species.
The way the lizard arrived in northern Italy remains unknown, but Mayor Tonini suspects it was illegally held before escaping or being allowed to flee. He said he did not believe the story at first until authorities verified the authenticity of the initial photo documenting its presence in the area.
At the farm where the lizard first appeared, there is a sense of anxiety among the workers, especially those who have to go out at night for irrigation work, after the animal fled and disappeared from sight. As the search continues, the lizard's location remains unknown, amid widespread local and media anticipation of the outcome of this unusual chase.
