في الأزقة الخاملة لحي «كيبسيلي» وسط العاصمة اليونانية، لم يكن المشرد الذي اعتاد اللجوء للمباني المهجورة يتوقع أن قدمه ستطأ مسرح جريمة سينمائية، فحقيبة سفر ضخمة أُلقيت في زاوية مظلمة بشارع «إيفلبيدون»، لتنبعث منها ريبة قاطعة.. لكن الصدمة الحقيقية تمثلت في ساق بشرية متدلية من سحابها الناقص!
البلاغ الخاطف استنفر وحدة جرائم القتل في أثينا، ليتبين أن الضحية ليست سوى السائحة الإسكتلندية إليزابيث جين روس (38 عاماً)، والتي أبحرت في رحلة غامضة عبر عدة دول، قبل أن تنتهي حياتها بطريقة مأساوية داخل هذه الحقيبة.
تتبع التحقيقات الأولية، المعتمدة على البيانات البيومترية الأمريكية والهيئة البريطانية (BBC)، كشف خط سير معقد للضحية؛ إذ غادرت الولايات المتحدة مروراً بقبرص، حتى حطت رحالها في اليونان بنهاية يونيو.
وفقاً لشهادة والدها لوسائل إعلام يونانية، كانت روس تقيم مع صديقين في ضواحي أثينا، قبل أن تخرج في منتصف يوليو قاصدة حي «كيبسيلي» للقاء مجموعة من أصدقائها الأمريكيين.. وكانت تلك اللحظة هي الفاصل الزمني الأخير الذي شوهدت فيه على قيد الحياة.
اللغز الذي حير المحققين وحول الجريمة إلى قضية معقدة يتعلق بالهاتف المحمول للضحية، فبينما يؤكد الطبيب الشرعي أن الوفاة وقعت فور اختفائها تقريباً، استمر هاتفها في بث الإشارات وتحديث الموقع الجغرافي، بل وإرسال رسائل نصية حتى صباح اليوم الذي عُثر فيه على جثتها!
وترجح المعطيات الأمنية فرضية مرعبة تتمثل في أن الجاني لم يكتفِ بالإجهاز على السائحة ووضعها في الحقيبة، بل احتفظ بهاتفها وظل يراسل المعارف لتضليل عائلتها والشرطة، ورسم «سراب رقمي» يوهم الجميع بأنها لا تزال تتجول بحرية في شوارع أثينا!
وتعكف المختبرات الجنائية حالياً على فحص النسيج الخارجي للحقيبة وسحابها لسحب أطراف عينات الحمض النووي (DNA) والبصمات، بالتوازي مع مسح شامل لكاميرات المراقبة في الحي، للتوصل إلى هوية الشخص الذي نقل «الحقيبة اللغز» وأسقطها في المكان المهجور.
In the desolate alleys of the "Kipseli" neighborhood in the heart of the Greek capital, the homeless man who usually sought refuge in abandoned buildings did not expect his foot to tread upon a cinematic crime scene, as a massive suitcase was thrown into a dark corner of "Evlebidon" street, emanating a palpable sense of unease.. but the real shock was represented by a human leg dangling from its incomplete zipper!
The swift report alerted the homicide unit in Athens, revealing that the victim was none other than the Scottish tourist Elizabeth Jane Ross (38 years old), who had embarked on a mysterious journey through several countries, before her life tragically ended inside this suitcase.
Initial investigations, based on American biometric data and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), uncovered a complex travel route for the victim; she left the United States passing through Cyprus, until she finally landed in Greece at the end of June.
According to her father's testimony to Greek media, Ross was staying with two friends in the suburbs of Athens, before she went out in mid-July intending to meet a group of her American friends in the "Kipseli" neighborhood.. and that moment was the last time she was seen alive.
The mystery that puzzled investigators and turned the crime into a complex case relates to the victim's mobile phone, as while the forensic doctor confirms that the death occurred almost immediately after her disappearance, her phone continued to emit signals and update its geographical location, even sending text messages until the morning of the day her body was found!
Security data suggests a terrifying hypothesis that the perpetrator not only killed the tourist and placed her in the suitcase, but also kept her phone and continued to message acquaintances to mislead her family and the police, creating a "digital mirage" that deceived everyone into believing she was still wandering freely in the streets of Athens!
Forensic laboratories are currently examining the outer fabric of the suitcase and its zipper to extract DNA samples and fingerprints, alongside a comprehensive sweep of surveillance cameras in the neighborhood, to identify the person who transported the "mystery suitcase" and dropped it in the abandoned location.
