Within minutes, the streets leading to the prison turned into a theater of screams and running, hundreds of inmate families rushing in shock and disbelief, banging on the iron doors forcefully, demanding to see their children or hear their voices to confirm they were still alive.
Despite attempts by prison officers to use loudspeakers to calm the terror and assure that “everything is fine and there is no fire,” the power of the rumor was stronger than any rational call.
