The health authorities announced that the Ebola virus has claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people in the fastest outbreak of the disease, recording a 50% increase in about a week in eastern Congo.
The authorities clarified that the number of recorded cases of the disease as of Tuesday reached 3,442 cases, while the number of deaths stood at 1,521 cases.
For its part, the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, affiliated with the African Union, stated today that the sharp rise since last week partially reflects a backlog in the number of confirmed or recorded cases and deaths, noting that the outbreak announced on May 15 is linked to the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there are no approved vaccines or treatments.
The outbreak is primarily concentrated in the remote Ituri province in eastern Congo, which accounts for about 90% of the cases, but other cases have been confirmed in five provinces, including the city of Kisangani, one of the largest cities in the country.
