The sky of the Northern Borders region is adorned during summer nights by the appearance of the constellations Ursa Major and Capricornus, in an astronomical scene that attracts stargazing enthusiasts and highlights the importance of these constellations in celestial navigation and direction finding throughout history.
Zahi Al-Khalawi, the head of the Space and Astronomy Association in the Northern Borders, explained that the constellation Ursa Major includes the formation known as the Big Dipper, and the stars Dubhe and Merak are used to locate the North Star (Polaris); which sailors and travelers relied on in ancient times to determine true north. The constellation also contains several prominent galaxies.
He pointed out that the constellation Capricornus is one of the constellations of the zodiac and is clearly visible on summer evenings, with the star Deneb Algedi being one of its most notable stars. Ancient astronomers and travelers benefited from it in identifying the locations of constellations and using them for nighttime navigation.
Al-Khalawi confirmed that the sky of the Northern Borders region, with its clear atmosphere and low light pollution, is one of the best astronomical observation sites in the Kingdom, noting that following the constellations contributes to spreading scientific culture and enhancing interest in astronomy and space sciences.
