A court in the South Korean capital, Seoul, has ruled that SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won must pay approximately 944 billion won (equivalent to about 640 million dollars) to his ex-wife Roh Soo-hyun, in one of the largest divorce settlements the country has seen.
The ruling has brought the case back into the spotlight, especially given the significant increase in Choi's wealth in recent years, driven by the remarkable growth of SK Hynix, a company specializing in memory chips used in artificial intelligence technologies.
The new decision came after the Supreme Court reviewed a previous ruling issued in 2024, which had granted the wife 1.38 trillion won, before the court reduced the compensation amount to 944 billion won, while maintaining a separate ruling requiring an additional payment of 2 billion won.
The roots of the case date back to 2015, when Choi Tae-won publicly announced his extramarital relationship and the birth of a child from it, before filing for divorce in 2017, leading to a lengthy legal battle over the division of assets between the two parties.
The case has garnered widespread attention in South Korea due to the large sum of money at stake, along with its connection to the significant transformations within the SK Group, particularly with the global boom in artificial intelligence, which has bolstered SK Hynix's position as one of the leading suppliers of high-performance memory chips.
Analysts believe that the value of the new settlement, despite being lower than the previous ruling, may push the group chairman to consider selling part of his shares or using them as collateral to obtain financing, although they do not expect this move to significantly impact his influence within the group, which is the second-largest industrial conglomerate in South Korea.
