لطالما سحرتنا الزرافات برقابها الشامخة في السماء ومشيتها الهادئة، واعتبرها البشر لقرون مجرد كائنات لطيفة تتميز بطول قامتها بين الثديات البرية. لكن دراسة علمية حديثة نُشرت في مجلة «Scientific Reports» المرموقة، جاءت لتفجر مفاجأة مذهلة وصادمة لعلماء الأحياء، وتثبت أن هذه الرؤوس العالية تحوي أدمغة قادرة على التفكير وحل مسائل الرياضيات، محققة مهارات عددية تفوق ما تمتلكه الكلاب والخيول!
قاد الدراسة باحث علم النفس الحيوي بجامعة برشلونة البروفيسور إيكر لويدي، وأُجريت على 4 زرافات في حديقة حيوان المدينة، لتكشف قدرة تفكير ذهني غير متوقعة عند هذه الكائنات في التعامل مع لغة الأرقام والكميات.
كيف حلت الزرافة العبقرية مسألة حسابية؟
اعتمد الاختبار العلمي على «قطع الجزر» وهي الوجبة المفضلة والشهية للزرافات. وقام الباحث بوضع كميات مختلفة من الجزر داخل حاويات مغلقة أمام أعين الزرافات، ثم بدأ بإضافة قطع أخرى بشكل خفي، وكان على الزرافات تخمين أي الحاويات تحتوي على المجموع الأكبر لتنال مكافأتها.
و أظهر مقطع فيديو لزرافة ذكية تُدعى «نورو» نجاحاً باهراً أبهر العلماء، حيث وُضعت أمامها حاويتان، الأولى بها قطعتان والثانية بها ثلاث. قام الباحث بعد ذلك بإضافة قطعتين إضافيتين للحاوية الأولى خفية. وبعد ثوانٍ من التفكير والتحليل الذهني، قامت «نورو» بحل المعادلة الحسابية واختارت الحاوية الأولى بشكل صحيح لتفوز بالجائزة وتلتهم 4 قطع جزر كاملة!
وأوضح العلماء أن هذا السلوك لا يعتمد على الحظ، بل يتطلب قدرة متطورة على «المعالجة الذهنية للكميات» والربط بينها، وهو ما يمثل الأساس الإدراكي لعملية الجمع الحسابي، دون الحاجة لرموز رقمية كالبشر.
المثير للضحك في التجربة، أن الذكاء لم يتوقف عند حل المسائل الحسابية، فبينما نجحت زرافتان في الاختبار بتفوق لافت، حاولت الزرافتان الأخيرتان «الغش» والتحايل على الباحث! حيث لاحظتا بحسهما الذكي حركة يد العالم، واختارتا الحاوية الأخيرة التي لمستها يده طمعاً في اختصار الوقت دون عناء الحساب الذهني.
وحاول الفريق البحثي تطوير التجربة لاختبار قدرة الزرافات على عمليات «الطرح»، إلا أن محاولاتها باءت بالفشل نظراً لتعقيد الفكرة هندسياً وذهنياً مقارنة بعمليات الجمع.
لماذا تحتاج الزرافات لـ«الرياضيات»؟
أكد العلماء أن هذه المهارات الحسابية المدهشة ليست مجرد تسلية أو خدعة لـ«السيرك»، بل هي أداة حيوية جبارة تساعد الزرافات على البقاء في الطبيعة القاسية، فهي تستخدم هذا الحساب الذهني لتحديد أي المناطق تحتوي على عدد أكبر من أشجار «الأكاسيا» الغنية بالغذاء لتوفير طاقتها، وحساب المسافات وأعداد الحيوانات المفترسة لتجنب الهجمات القاتلة.
ويطرق هذا الاكتشاف المثير جدران الوعي البشري مجدداً، ليرسل تذكيراً صارخاً بأننا لسنا الكائنات الذكية الوحيدة التي تتقن لغة الأرقام على هذا الكوكب!

However, a recent scientific study published in the prestigious journal "Scientific Reports" has come to reveal an astonishing and shocking surprise for biologists, proving that these tall heads possess brains capable of thinking and solving mathematical problems, achieving numerical skills that surpass those of dogs and horses!
The study was led by biobehavioral psychologist Professor Iker Luide from the University of Barcelona and was conducted on 4 giraffes at the city's zoo, revealing an unexpected mental thinking ability in these creatures when dealing with the language of numbers and quantities.
How did the genius giraffe solve a mathematical problem?
The scientific test relied on "carrot pieces," which are the favorite and delicious meal for giraffes. The researcher placed different quantities of carrots inside closed containers in front of the giraffes, then began secretly adding more pieces, and the giraffes had to guess which container contained the largest total to earn their reward.
A video showed a smart giraffe named "Noru" achieving remarkable success that amazed scientists, as she was presented with two containers, one with two pieces and the other with three. The researcher then secretly added two more pieces to the first container. After a few seconds of thinking and mental analysis, "Noru" solved the mathematical equation and correctly chose the first container to win the prize and devour 4 whole carrot pieces!
Scientists explained that this behavior does not rely on luck but requires an advanced ability for "mental processing of quantities" and linking them, which represents the cognitive basis for the arithmetic addition process, without the need for numerical symbols like humans.
Interestingly, the intelligence did not stop at solving mathematical problems; while two giraffes excelled in the test, the last two attempted to "cheat" and outsmart the researcher! They noticed the scientist's hand movements with their keen senses and chose the last container that his hand touched, hoping to save time without the effort of mental calculation.
The research team attempted to develop the experiment to test the giraffes' ability to perform "subtraction," but their attempts failed due to the complexity of the idea both geometrically and mentally compared to addition operations.
Why do giraffes need "mathematics"?
Scientists confirmed that these astonishing mathematical skills are not just a form of entertainment or a trick for the "circus," but rather a vital tool that helps giraffes survive in the harsh nature. They use this mental calculation to determine which areas contain a larger number of "acacia" trees rich in food to conserve their energy, and to calculate distances and the number of predators to avoid deadly attacks.
This exciting discovery once again knocks on the walls of human consciousness, sending a stark reminder that we are not the only intelligent beings mastering the language of numbers on this planet!
