ألقت السلطات في الإكوادور القبض على رجل بريطاني يواجه اتهامات بقتل امرأة كولومبية، بعدما عُثر على جثمانها داخل حقيبة سفر في شقة بالعاصمة الكولومبية بوغوتا، وفقاً لما أعلنته السلطات المحلية.
وبحسب صحيفة الغارديان، قالت النيابة العامة الكولومبية إن المشتبه به، ماثيو آشلي فوستر-سميث (46 عاماً)، المنحدر من مدينة بورنموث البريطانية، متهم بالتسبب في وفاة ناتاليا فيالبا (36 عاماً) داخل شقة في حي تشيكو الراقي في بوغوتا يوم 18 يونيو، قبل أن يضع جثمانها داخل حقيبة سفر في محاولة لإخفاء الجريمة ثم يفر من المكان.
وبحسب بيان للنيابة، فإن التحقيقات تشير إلى أن المتهم اعتدى على الضحية بالضرب حتى فارقت الحياة، فيما أصدرت السلطات الكولومبية مذكرة توقيف بحقه، إلى جانب تعميم «النشرة الحمراء» عبر منظمة الشرطة الجنائية الدولية (الإنتربول) لتتبعه دولياً.
وأُلقي القبض على فوستر-سميث في مطار كيتو الدولي، عاصمة الإكوادور، بعد عملية مشتركة شاركت فيها السلطات البريطانية، من بينها شرطة مقاطعة دورسيت، التي ساعدت في تحديد مكان وجوده، بحسب ما أكده عمدة بوغوتا كارلوس فرناندو غالان.
وقال غالان إن «هذه القضية المؤلمة لن تمر دون عقاب»، مشيداً بالتعاون الأمني الدولي الذي أسفر عن توقيف المشتبه به.
وقبل اعتقاله، أجرى فوستر-سميث اتصالاً هاتفياً مع صحيفة «ذا صن» البريطانية، نفى خلاله أي علاقة له بالجريمة، مدعياً أنه كان يشاهد مباراة منتخب إنجلترا أمام كرواتيا في كأس العالم داخل حانة أيرلندية وقت وقوع الحادثة.
وقال للصحيفة: «كنت أشاهد المباراة على شاشة كبيرة، وبعد انتهائها ذهبت إلى مركز تجاري، وتجولت قليلاً، واشتريت مثلجات، ثم عدت لمتابعة بقية المباريات».
إلا أن المباراة التي أشار إليها أُقيمت في 17 يونيو بمدينة دالاس الأمريكية، أي قبل يوم من التاريخ الذي تقول السلطات إن الجريمة وقعت فيه.
وذكرت صحيفة «ذا صن» أن المشتبه به أجرى اتصالاً ثانياً معها قبل توقيفه، فيما أفاد مصدر للصحيفة بأن السلطات تمكنت من تحديد موقعه من خلال تلك المكالمات الهاتفية.
من جهتها، أكدت وزارة الخارجية البريطانية أنها تقدم الدعم القنصلي لمواطن بريطاني محتجز في الإكوادور، مشيرة إلى أنها على تواصل مع السلطات المحلية بشأن القضية.
ولا تزال التحقيقات مستمرة، فيما ينتظر أن تواجه السلطات الإكوادورية طلباً لتسليم المشتبه به إلى كولومبيا لمثوله أمام القضاء.
The authorities in Ecuador have arrested a British man facing charges of murdering a Colombian woman, after her body was found inside a suitcase in an apartment in the Colombian capital, Bogotá, according to local authorities.
According to The Guardian, the Colombian public prosecutor's office stated that the suspect, Matthew Ashley Foster-Smith (46), originally from Bournemouth, England, is accused of causing the death of Natalia Vialba (36) inside an apartment in the upscale Chico neighborhood of Bogotá on June 18, before placing her body inside a suitcase in an attempt to conceal the crime and then fleeing the scene.
According to a statement from the prosecutor's office, investigations indicate that the accused assaulted the victim, leading to her death, while Colombian authorities issued an arrest warrant for him, along with a "Red Notice" through Interpol to track him internationally.
Foster-Smith was arrested at Quito International Airport, the capital of Ecuador, following a joint operation involving British authorities, including the Dorset Police, which helped locate him, as confirmed by Bogotá Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán.
Galán stated, "This painful case will not go unpunished," praising the international security cooperation that led to the suspect's arrest.
Before his arrest, Foster-Smith made a phone call to the British newspaper The Sun, during which he denied any involvement in the crime, claiming he was watching the England national team match against Croatia in the World Cup at an Irish pub at the time of the incident.
He told the newspaper: "I was watching the match on a big screen, and after it ended, I went to a shopping center, walked around a bit, bought some ice cream, and then returned to watch the rest of the matches."
However, the match he referred to took place on June 17 in Dallas, Texas, one day before the date authorities say the crime occurred.
The Sun reported that the suspect made a second call to them before his arrest, while a source told the newspaper that authorities were able to locate him through those phone calls.
For its part, the British Foreign Office confirmed that it is providing consular support to a British citizen detained in Ecuador, noting that it is in contact with local authorities regarding the case.
Investigations are still ongoing, while Ecuadorian authorities are expected to face a request to extradite the suspect to Colombia to stand trial.
