تتجه الأنظار اليوم (الأربعاء) إلى محكمة التاج في مدينة كامبريدج البريطانية، التي تعقد عند الثانية ظهراً بتوقيت لندن (الرابعة مساءً بتوقيت الرياض) جلسة النطق بالحكم على المدان بقتل الطالب السعودي محمد القاسم، في جريمة هزت الرأي العام داخل المملكة وخارجها.

السجن 30 عاماً
وتشهد الجلسة عرض بيانات تأثير الجريمة على أسرة الضحية والمحيط المجتمعي، إلى جانب مرافعة الدفاع النهائية، قبل أن يحدد القاضي مدة العقوبة التي يتوقع مراقبون أن تتراوح بين 25 و30 عاماً، ضمن عقوبة السجن المؤبد المقررة قانوناً في جرائم القتل العمد ببريطانيا.
ثبوت ارتكاب المتهم جريمة قتل العمد
وكانت هيئة المحلفين في محكمة التاج بمدينة كامبريدج البريطانية أدانت ، شهر مارس الماضي، المتهم الرئيسي في قضية مقتل الطالب السعودي محمد القاسم، بعد ثبوت ارتكابه جريمة قتل عمد، رافضة دفوعه التي زعم فيها أن الطعنة القاتلة جاءت دفاعاً عن النفس.
وجاء قرار الإدانة بعد أسبوعين من الجلسات والمداولات المكثفة ومراجعة الأدلة والشهادات التي قدمها الادعاء، فيما حسمت هيئة المحلفين القضية خلال نحو ساعتين فقط من بدء مداولاتها النهائية.
كاميرات المراقبة تكشف تفاصيل الجريمة
وكان محمد القاسم (20 عاماً)، يدرس اللغة الإنجليزية ضمن برنامج صيفي في مدينة كامبريدج، عندما تعرض لطعنة قاتلة في الرقبة أثناء جلوسه مع أصدقائه خارج سكن طلابي بالقرب من محطة القطار الرئيسية في المدينة، مساء الأول من أغسطس 2025.
وأظهرت تسجيلات كاميرات المراقبة المتهم تشاز كوريغان، مرتدياً سترة عمل عاكسة للضوء، وهو يقترب من مجموعة القاسم ويتحدث معهم قبل أن يغادر المكان ويعود مجدداً لتنشب مواجهة انتهت بتوجيه الطعنة القاتلة.
كما وثقت الكاميرات لحظة فرار المتهم من الموقع، بينما ظهر القاسم وهو يركض لمسافة قصيرة قبل أن ينهار أرضاً متأثراً بإصابته.
«كنت أريد إخافته فقط»
وخلال المحاكمة، أقر كوريغان بحيازة السكين، لكنه نفى تهمة القتل، مدعياً أنه أخرج سكين مطبخ كان يحملها للحماية الشخصية بهدف «التخويف فقط».
وزعم أنه كان تحت تأثير الكحول بعد قضائه ساعات في إحدى الحانات، حيث تناول عدة مشروبات كحولية، كما اعترف بتعاطي الكوكايين مرتين خلال تلك الليلة.
وقال للمحلفين إنه اعتقد أن القاسم كان على وشك الاعتداء عليه، ما دفعه إلى إشهار السكين لإبعاده عنه، مدعياً أنه لم يدرك أن الطعنة أصابته إصابة قاتلة.
غير أن هيئة المحلفين رفضت روايته بالكامل، معتبرة أن الأدلة المادية والتسجيلات المصورة تثبت مسؤوليته عن الجريمة.
طعنة بعمق 11.5 سم
وأفادت أخصائية الطب الشرعي بأن القاسم تعرض لجرح نافذ في الرقبة بعمق 11.5 سنتيمتراً، أدى إلى قطع أحد الشرايين الحيوية، ما تسبب في وفاته خلال أقل من ساعة من وقوع الاعتداء.
كما عثرت الشرطة على أداة الجريمة، وهي سكين مطبخ فضية يبلغ طول نصلها 13 سنتيمتراً، إضافة إلى سترة المتهم داخل سلة مهملات قريبة من موقع الحادثة.
والد المتهم يواجه الإدانة أيضاً
وكشفت القضية عن تورط والد المتهم، بيتر كوريغان، الذي اعترف أمام المحكمة بتهمة مساعدة جانٍ على الإفلات من العدالة، وينتظر بدوره صدور الحكم بحقه.
في المقابل، وصفت أسرة محمد القاسم ابنها بأنه «ابن بار وأخ محب والركيزة المعنوية للعائلة»، فيما أعربت المدرسة اللغوية التي كان يدرس فيها عن حزنها العميق لفقدان أحد طلابها.
المؤبد عقوبة إلزامية
وبحسب القانون البريطاني، فإن عقوبة السجن المؤبد تعد إلزامية في جرائم القتل العمد، إلا أن المحكمة ستحدد خلال جلسة النطق بالحكم الحد الأدنى لفترة السجن التي يتعين على المدان قضاؤها قبل إمكانية النظر في الإفراج المشروط، والتي قد تتراوح بين 25 و30 عاماً وفقاً لظروف القضية.

30-Year Sentence
The session will witness the presentation of impact statements regarding the crime on the victim's family and the surrounding community, in addition to the final defense plea, before the judge determines the length of the sentence, which observers expect to range between 25 and 30 years, as part of the life imprisonment penalty mandated by law for murder in the UK.
Conviction for Intentional Murder
The jury at the Crown Court in Cambridge convicted the main defendant in the case of the murder of Saudi student Mohammed Al-Qasim last March, after it was proven that he committed intentional murder, rejecting his claims that the fatal stab was in self-defense.
The conviction came after two weeks of intensive sessions and deliberations, reviewing the evidence and testimonies presented by the prosecution, while the jury resolved the case in about two hours after starting their final deliberations.
Surveillance Cameras Reveal Crime Details
Mohammed Al-Qasim (20 years old) was studying English as part of a summer program in Cambridge when he was fatally stabbed in the neck while sitting with friends outside a student residence near the main train station in the city on the evening of August 1, 2025.
Surveillance camera footage showed the defendant, Chaz Corrigan, wearing a reflective work jacket, approaching Al-Qasim's group and talking to them before leaving the scene and returning to instigate a confrontation that ended with the fatal stab.
The cameras also documented the moment the defendant fled the scene, while Al-Qasim was seen running a short distance before collapsing to the ground, affected by his injury.
“I Just Wanted to Scare Him”
During the trial, Corrigan admitted to possessing the knife but denied the murder charge, claiming he pulled out a kitchen knife he was carrying for personal protection with the intent to “just scare” Al-Qasim.
He alleged that he was under the influence of alcohol after spending hours in a bar, where he had several alcoholic drinks, and he also admitted to using cocaine twice that night.
He told the jurors that he believed Al-Qasim was about to attack him, prompting him to brandish the knife to ward him off, claiming he did not realize that the stab was fatal.
However, the jury completely rejected his account, considering that the physical evidence and video recordings proved his responsibility for the crime.
11.5 cm Deep Stab
A forensic specialist reported that Al-Qasim suffered a penetrating wound to the neck measuring 11.5 centimeters deep, which severed a vital artery, causing his death within less than an hour of the attack.
The police also found the murder weapon, a silver kitchen knife with a blade length of 13 centimeters, along with the defendant's jacket in a trash bin near the crime scene.
Defendant's Father Also Faces Conviction
The case revealed the involvement of the defendant's father, Peter Corrigan, who confessed in court to aiding an offender in evading justice, and he is also awaiting sentencing.
In contrast, Mohammed Al-Qasim's family described their son as “a devoted son, a loving brother, and the moral pillar of the family,” while the language school he attended expressed deep sorrow for the loss of one of its students.
Life Imprisonment is Mandatory
According to British law, life imprisonment is mandatory for intentional murder, but the court will determine during the sentencing session the minimum period of imprisonment that the convicted individual must serve before being eligible for parole, which may range between 25 and 30 years depending on the circumstances of the case.
