ألقت الشرطة في مدينة دايجون بكوريا الجنوبية القبض على رجل يبلغ من العمر 40 عاماً، بعد اتهامه بإنشاء ونشر صورة مزيفة مولدة بالذكاء الاصطناعي لذئب هرب من حديقة حيوانات، ما أدى إلى تضليل السلطات وإعاقة جهود البحث عن الحيوان الذي أثار حالة من الذعر بين السكان.
وكان الذئب المدعو «نيكو»، وهو ذكر يبلغ من العمر عامين ويزن نحو 30-35 كيلوغراماً، قد هرب من حظيرته في حديقة O-World الترفيهية والحيوانات بمدينة دايجون في 8 أبريل، بعد أن حفر نفقاً تحت السياج.
وأطلقت السلطات عملية بحث واسعة النطاق استمرت 9 أيام، شاركت فيها الشرطة، رجال الإطفاء، الطائرات المسيرة، والكاميرات الحرارية، وأدت إلى إغلاق بعض المدارس احتياطياً.
وبعد ساعات قليلة من الهروب، انتشرت على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي صورة تظهر الذئب وهو يعبر تقاطع طرق قريباً من الحديقة، التي اعتمدت عليها السلطات المحلية، فنشرت إشعارات طارئة للسكان، ووسعت نطاق البحث ليشمل المنطقة المصورة، بل استخدمت الصورة في الإحاطات الإعلامية الرسمية.
إلا أن التحقيقات كشفت لاحقاً أن الصورة كانت مزيفة تماماً، مولدة باستخدام أدوات الذكاء الاصطناعي، حتى أعلنت وحدة مكافحة الجرائم الإلكترونية بشرطة دايجون قبل يومين اعتقال الرجل المشتبه به، الذي اعترف خلال التحقيق بأنه صنع الصورة «بهدف المزاح فقط»، حيث يواجه اتهامات بعرقلة عمل السلطات العامة عن طريق الخداع.
وأدى انتشار الصورة المزيفة إلى انتقادات حادة للسلطات المحلية بسبب انخداعها السريع، وأضاع وقتاً ثميناً كان يمكن استغلاله في تعقب الذئب الحقيقي، ختى تمكنت السلطات في النهاية من إلقاء القبض على «نيكو» باستخدام طلقة مهدئة، دون إصابته بأذى.
وأكدت السلطات أنها تلقت أكثر من 100 بلاغ عن رؤية الذئب، بعضها كان مزيفاً أو مضللاً، ما يعكس التحدي المتزايد الذي تواجهه الشرطة في عصر الـAI.
وأثار هروب «نيكو» اهتماماً إعلامياً واسعاً داخل كوريا الجنوبية وخارجها، وألهم حتى عملات مشفرة meme، ودفع الرئيس الكوري إلى التعبير عن قلقه.
The police in Daejeon, South Korea, arrested a 40-year-old man after he was accused of creating and publishing a fake AI-generated image of a wolf that escaped from a zoo, which misled authorities and hindered efforts to search for the animal that caused panic among residents.
The wolf, named "Nico," is a two-year-old male weighing about 30-35 kilograms, and he escaped from his enclosure at the O-World amusement and zoo park in Daejeon on April 8, after digging a tunnel under the fence.
The authorities launched a large-scale search operation that lasted nine days, involving police, firefighters, drones, and thermal cameras, which even led to the temporary closure of some schools.
Just a few hours after the escape, a photo circulated on social media showing the wolf crossing an intersection near the park, which local authorities relied on, issuing emergency alerts to residents and expanding the search to include the area depicted in the photo, even using the image in official press briefings.
However, investigations later revealed that the image was completely fake, generated using AI tools, until the Cyber Crime Unit of the Daejeon police announced two days ago the arrest of the suspect, who admitted during interrogation that he created the image "just for fun," as he faces charges of obstructing public authorities through deception.
The spread of the fake image led to sharp criticism of local authorities for being quickly deceived, wasting precious time that could have been used to track the real wolf, until the authorities finally managed to capture "Nico" using a tranquilizer shot, without harming him.
The authorities confirmed that they received over 100 reports of sightings of the wolf, some of which were fake or misleading, reflecting the increasing challenge faced by the police in the AI era.
Nico's escape garnered widespread media attention both within South Korea and abroad, even inspiring meme cryptocurrencies, and prompted the Korean president to express his concerns.
