قال قائد شرطة منطقة هوجاي بولاية آسام في الهند إن 7 أفيال قُتلت وأصيب آخر عندما اصطدم قطار متجه إلى دلهي بقطيع أفيال. وأوضح بيان صادر عن سكك حديد الحدود الشمالية الشرقية أن موقع الحادث الذي شهدته منطقة هوجاي ليس ممراً مخصصاً للفيلة.
وقالت الشركة إن قائد القاطرة استخدم مكابح الطوارئ عند رؤية القطيع، لكن الفيلة اندفعت نحو القطار.
ووفقاً للبيان، تسبب الاصطدام الذي وقع الساعة 2:17 صباح اليوم (20:47 بتوقيت غرينتش الجمعة) في خروج القاطرة وخمس عربات من القطار عن القضبان لكن دون إصابة أي أشخاص.
وقالت «السكك الحديدية»: «يتم تحويل القطارات التي كان من المقرر أن تمر عبر هذا الجزء إلى خط آخر.. أعمال الترميم جارية».
The police chief of the Hojai district in Assam, India, stated that 7 elephants were killed and another was injured when a train heading to Delhi collided with a herd of elephants. A statement from the Northeast Frontier Railway clarified that the site of the incident in the Hojai district is not a designated elephant crossing.
The company stated that the train driver used the emergency brakes upon seeing the herd, but the elephants charged towards the train.
According to the statement, the collision that occurred at 2:17 AM today (20:47 GMT on Friday) caused the locomotive and five carriages of the train to derail, but no people were injured.
The railway said, "Trains that were scheduled to pass through this section are being diverted to another line... repair work is ongoing."
