في مشهد خرج عن المألوف في عالم السياسة الجاد، خطف رئيس وزراء تيمور الشرقية كاي رالا شانانا غوسماو الأنظار خلال قمة رابطة دول الآسيان الـ47 في كوالالمبور، بعدما قرر إدخال لمسته الخاصة على الدبلوماسية عبر توزيع قطع من الحلوى على الصحفيين الحاضرين لتغطية الحدث.
وبينما كانت القمة تقترب من نهايتها، اقترب الزعيم البالغ من العمر 79 عاماً من مجموعة الصحفيين في قاعة المؤتمرات، وأخرج حفنة من الحلوى من جيبه مبتسماً وهو يوزعها بنفسه على المراسلين الذين التفّوا حوله في أجواء طغى عليها المرح والعفوية.
ونقلت وسائل إعلام دولية أن غوسماو بدا وكأنه «سانتا كلوز الدبلوماسية»، يشارك الصحفيين لحظة ودّ غير متوقعة وسط جدول مزدحم باللقاءات الرسمية، قبل أن يمازح أحد المراسلين الذي سأله عن حصيلة الاجتماعات قائلاً: «يوم واحد فيه أربع أو خمس أو ست اجتماعات.. أشعر بالدوار!»
ولم تكن هذه المفاجأة الأولى من نوعها، إذ سبق لرئيس الوزراء أن كرّر اللفتة ذاتها في قمة آسيان السابقة في مايو الماضي، ما جعلها تقليداً طريفاً يربطه بالصحفيين الذين ينتظرون لقاءه بابتسامة.
ويُعرف غوسماو بأسلوبه الإنساني في التعامل مع الإعلام، إذ يجمع بين الظرف والبساطة والدبلوماسية المرنة، وهي صفات جعلته محبوباً داخل الأوساط الصحفية، ودفعت وسائل الإعلام العالمية لوصف تصرفه بأنه «رمز إنساني نادر في زمن السياسة الصلبة».
In an unusual scene in the world of serious politics, East Timor's Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão captured attention during the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, after he decided to add his personal touch to diplomacy by distributing pieces of candy to the journalists present to cover the event.
As the summit was nearing its end, the 79-year-old leader approached a group of journalists in the conference hall, pulled out a handful of candy from his pocket, smiling as he personally handed it out to the reporters who gathered around him in an atmosphere filled with fun and spontaneity.
International media reported that Gusmão seemed like the "Santa Claus of diplomacy," sharing an unexpected moment of warmth with the journalists amidst a busy schedule of official meetings, before joking with one of the reporters who asked him about the outcome of the meetings, saying: "One day with four, five, or six meetings... I feel dizzy!"
This was not the first surprise of its kind, as the Prime Minister had previously repeated the same gesture at the last ASEAN summit in May, making it a charming tradition that connects him with the journalists who look forward to meeting him with a smile.
Gusmão is known for his human approach to dealing with the media, combining wit, simplicity, and flexible diplomacy, qualities that have made him beloved within journalistic circles, prompting global media to describe his actions as "a rare human symbol in an era of hard politics."
