شهدت العاصمة الكينية نيروبي أمس (الخميس) لحظات مأساوية خلال مراسم تأبين الزعيم السياسي الراحل رايلا أودينغا، بعدما تحولت الجنازة إلى ساحة فوضى واشتباكات دامية بين قوات الأمن وحشود المعزين.
وكان عشرات الآلاف قد احتشدوا في أحد الملاعب الكبرى لإلقاء النظرة الأخيرة على جثمان أودينغا، أحد أبرز رموز المعارضة في تاريخ كينيا. إلا أن الأجواء الحزينة سرعان ما تحولت إلى مواجهات عنيفة عندما أطلقت قوات الشرطة قنابل الغاز المسيل للدموع والرصاص الحي لتفريق الحشود، بعد أن تمكن عدد من المعزين من اختراق المنطقة القريبة من النعش.
وأكدت مصادر رسمية مقتل شخصين على الأقل، فيما تحدثت وسائل إعلام محلية عن ارتفاع العدد إلى أربعة. وتداولت شبكات التلفزة ومواقع التواصل الاجتماعي مقاطع مؤثرة تظهر حالات هلع وذعر بين الجموع.
وتأتي هذه الحادثة في ظل تصاعد الغضب الشعبي من الأساليب العنيفة التي تنتهجها الشرطة الكينية، خصوصاً بعد موجة من الاحتجاجات الدامية في يونيو الماضي أسفرت عن مقتل العشرات.
من جانبه، وصف الرئيس ويليام روتو أودينغا بأنه «قائد تاريخي لا يُنسى»، مؤكداً حضوره المراسم، من دون أن يصدر أي تعليق رسمي حول إطلاق النار.
يذكر أن رايلا أودينغا خاض خمسة سباقات رئاسية وظل أبرز وجوه المعارضة لعقود، وخلّفت وفاته فراغاً سياسياً كبيراً في البلاد، فيما يُتوقع أن تشهد كينيا مزيداً من التوترات مع اقتراب موعد الجنازة الرسمية اليوم (الجمعة).
The Kenyan capital, Nairobi, witnessed tragic moments yesterday (Thursday) during the memorial ceremony for the late political leader Raila Odinga, as the funeral turned into a scene of chaos and bloody clashes between security forces and crowds of mourners.
Tens of thousands had gathered at one of the major stadiums to pay their last respects to Odinga, one of the most prominent opposition figures in Kenya's history. However, the somber atmosphere quickly escalated into violent confrontations when police forces fired tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the crowds after some mourners managed to breach the area near the coffin.
Official sources confirmed the deaths of at least two people, while local media reported that the number had risen to four. Television networks and social media shared distressing footage showing panic and terror among the crowds.
This incident comes amid rising public anger over the violent tactics employed by the Kenyan police, especially following a wave of bloody protests last June that resulted in dozens of deaths.
For his part, President William Ruto described Odinga as an "unforgettable historical leader," confirming his attendance at the ceremony without issuing any official comment regarding the gunfire.
It is worth noting that Raila Odinga contested five presidential races and remained a prominent face of the opposition for decades, and his death has left a significant political void in the country, with expectations of further tensions in Kenya as the date of the official funeral approaches today (Friday).
