وقالت السلطات الأمريكية إن توماس بيركنز (68 عامًا) وزوجته أجاثا بيركنز (66 عامًا) لقيا مصرعهما بعد تحطم طائرتهما الخاصة من طراز Socata TBM 700 على الطريق السريع رقم I-195 بالقرب من المخرج 22 في بلدة دارتموث، وذلك بعد دقائق من إقلاعها من مطار نيو بيدفورد الإقليمي في رحلة كانت متجهة إلى كينوشا، ولاية ويسكونسن.

وأفادت تقارير أولية بأن الحادثة وقعت تقريبا عند الساعة الثامنة صباحًا بالتوقيت المحلي، بينما كانت المنطقة تشهد أمطارًا غزيرة ورياحًا قوية نتيجة عاصفة شمالية شرقية، ما تسبب في ضعف الرؤية الجوية. ولم تتضح بعد الأسباب الدقيقة لسقوط الطائرة، فيما باشرت هيئة سلامة النقل الوطنية الأمريكية (NTSB) تحقيقاتها لمعرفة ملابسات الحادثة.

وخلال سقوط الطائرة، أصابت أجزاء منها سيارة من نوع هيونداي سوناتا كانت تسير على الطريق ذاته، ما أدى إلى إصابة سائقتها بجروح غير خطيرة. ونُقلت السيدة إلى مستشفى سانت لوك لتلقي العلاج قبل أن تُغادره لاحقًا. وقالت والدة زوج السيدة المصابة، كاثي راموس، إن ابنة عائلتها كانت في طريق العودة إلى منزلها بعد إيصال زوجها إلى عمله حين فوجئت بالطائرة ترتطم بالقرب من سيارتها.
وأغلقت السلطات الطريق السريع لساعات بعد الحادثة لإزالة الحطام وتأمين المنطقة، بينما أُعيد فتح بعض المسارات لاحقًا لتخفيف الازدحام. وقال أحد السائقين الذين مرّوا بالمكان لقناة WCVB 5: «كنت أستمع إلى الراديو لأكتشف أن طائرةً تحطمت على الطريق أمامي، لم أصدق ما سمعت حتى رأيت الدخان بعيني».

One driver who passed by the scene told WCVB 5, "I was listening to the radio to find out that a plane had crashed on the road in front of me; I couldn't believe what I heard until I saw the smoke with my own eyes."
