أعلنت المصورة الصحفية الكندية فاليري زينك، استقالتها من وكالة رويترز للأنباء بعد ثماني سنوات من العمل كمراسلة مستقلة، احتجاجاً على ما وصفته بـ«خيانة الوكالة للصحفيين» في قطاع غزة، حيث انتقدت قي منشور مؤثر عبر حسابها على منصة إكس، دور «رويترز»'في «تبرير وتمكين» الجيش الإسرائيلي من استهداف وقتل 246 صحفياً فلسطينياً في غزة منذ أكتوبر 2023، معتبرة ذلك «خيانة للمهنة الصحفية».
وأشارت زينك إلى أن الوكالة ساهمت في نشر «روايات إسرائيلية لا أساس لها»، مثل الادعاء بأن الصحفي أنس الشريف، مراسل قناة الجزيرة الحائز على جائزة بوليتزر، كان «عنصراً في حماس»، وهو ما وصفته بأنه «كذبة من بين أكاذيب لا حصر لها» كررتها وسائل الإعلام الغربية.
كما أدانت زينك تقاعس «رويترز» عن الدفاع عن زملائها، بما في ذلك مصور الوكالة حسام المصري، الذي قُتل في هجوم إسرائيلي على مستشفى ناصر بخان يونس يوم الإثنين، ضمن ما وصفته بـ«هجوم مزدوج» استهدف الصحفيين والمسعفين عمداً.
وأرفقت زينك منشورها بصورة لبطاقتها الصحفية الممزقة، معربة عن «عارها وحزنها العميق» لاستمرارها في العمل مع الوكالة، وتعهدت بتكريس عملها المستقبلي لتكريم شجاعة الصحفيين في غزة، واصفة إياهم بـ«الأشجع والأفضل في تاريخ الصحافة».
وفاليري زينك، هي مصورة صحفية وناشطة مجتمعية مقرها مدينة ريجينا الكندية، عملت كمراسلة مستقلة ل«رويترز» منذ عام 2017، ونُشرت أعمالها في منصات عالمية مثل «نيويورك تايمز» و«الجزيرة» وتتمتع بتاريخ طويل من التضامن مع القضية الفلسطينية، حيث عملت كمسعفة خلال الانتفاضة الثانية في الضفة الغربية وغزة.
وفي نوفمبر 2023، شاركت في احتجاج لوقف إطلاق النار في مبنى البرلمان في ساسكاتشوان، مما أدى إلى منعها مؤقتاً من دخول المبنى لمدة ستة أشهر، وتأتي استقالتها في سياق غير مسبوق لاستهداف الصحفيين في غزة، حيث وثّقت منظمات مثل «لجنة حماية الصحفيين» مقتل ما لا يقل عن 244 صحفياً.
ويُعد هذا العدد الأعلى في أي نزاع في التاريخ الحديث، متجاوزًا الحروب العالمية الأولى والثانية وحروب كوريا وفيتنام وأفغانستان مجتمعة، حتى أثارت القضية جدلاً واسعاً، واتهمت منظمات حقوقية مثل «مراسلون بلا حدود» القوات الإسرائيلية بـ«إبادة الصحافة الفلسطينية» بلا عقاب.
وكان الهجوم على مستشفى ناصر، الذي أودى بحياة 20 شخصاً، بينهم خمسة صحفيين، قد أثار إدانات دولية، ووصفت نقابة الصحفيين الفلسطينيين الهجوم بأنه «حرب مفتوحة على الإعلام الحر»، بينما دعت المقررة الأممية فرانشيسكا ألبانيز إلى فرض عقوبات وحظر أسلحة على إسرائيل.
The Canadian photojournalist Valerie Zink announced her resignation from Reuters after eight years of working as a freelance correspondent, in protest against what she described as the "agency's betrayal of journalists" in Gaza. In an impactful post on her X platform account, she criticized Reuters' role in "justifying and enabling" the Israeli army to target and kill 246 Palestinian journalists in Gaza since October 2023, considering it a "betrayal of the journalistic profession."
Zink pointed out that the agency contributed to spreading "baseless Israeli narratives," such as the claim that journalist Anas Al-Sharif, a Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent for Al Jazeera, was "a member of Hamas," which she described as "one of countless lies" repeated by Western media.
Zink also condemned Reuters' failure to defend her colleagues, including agency photographer Hussam Al-Masri, who was killed in an Israeli attack on Al-Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis on Monday, as part of what she described as a "double attack" deliberately targeting journalists and paramedics.
She attached a photo of her torn press card to her post, expressing her "shame and deep sadness" for continuing to work with the agency, and pledged to dedicate her future work to honoring the courage of journalists in Gaza, describing them as "the bravest and best in the history of journalism."
Valerie Zink is a photojournalist and community activist based in Regina, Canada. She has worked as a freelance correspondent for Reuters since 2017, and her work has been published on global platforms such as The New York Times and Al Jazeera. She has a long history of solidarity with the Palestinian cause, having worked as a paramedic during the Second Intifada in the West Bank and Gaza.
In November 2023, she participated in a protest for a ceasefire at the Saskatchewan Parliament building, which led to her being temporarily banned from entering the building for six months. Her resignation comes in an unprecedented context of targeting journalists in Gaza, where organizations like the Committee to Protect Journalists have documented the killing of at least 244 journalists.
This number is the highest in any conflict in modern history, surpassing the combined toll of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Afghanistan War, leading to widespread controversy. Human rights organizations like Reporters Without Borders have accused Israeli forces of "exterminating Palestinian journalism" with impunity.
The attack on Al-Nasser Hospital, which resulted in the deaths of 20 people, including five journalists, sparked international condemnation. The Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate described the attack as "an open war on free media," while UN rapporteur Francesca Albanese called for sanctions and an arms embargo on Israel.
