أعلنت مصلحة السجون الفيدرالية الأمريكية أن غيلاين ماكسويل، الصديقة السابقة للملياردير الراحل جيفري إبستين، قد نُقلت من سجن في فلوريدا إلى معسكر سجن منخفض الحراسة في مدينة براين بولاية تكساس، في وقت يشهد فيه ملفها الجنائي تجدداً في الاهتمام العام والإعلامي.
وكانت ماكسويل قد أُدينت عام 2021 بتهم تتعلق باستدراج فتيات مراهقات لاستغلالهن جنسياً من قبل إبستين، وحُكم عليها بالسجن لمدة 20 عاماً. وقد أُودعت سابقاً في سجن منخفض الحراسة بمدينة تالاهاسي بفلوريدا، قبل نقلها إلى معسكر سجن في تكساس يُعرف بإيوائه شخصيات بارزة مثل إليزابيث هولمز (مؤسسة ثيرانوس)، وجين شاه (من برنامج «ربّات المنازل الحقيقيات»).
وعادة ما تخصص معسكرات السجون الفيدرالية منخفضة الحراسة للسجناء الذين يُعتبرون أقل خطورة، وغالباً لا تُحيط بها أسوار، وتُستخدم لتسهيل الأعمال الداخلية مثل الصيانة والبستنة دون قيود أمنية مشددة.
ورفض محامي ماكسويل التعليق على أسباب النقل، فيما يُرجح أن تكون الخطوة مرتبطة بالتطورات المتسارعة في القضية، خصوصاً بعد موجة غضب شعبي أعقبت قرار وزارة العدل عدم نشر مزيد من الوثائق المتعلقة بقضية إبستين.
من جهته، أكد الرئيس السابق دونالد ترمب أنه لم يتلقَ أي طلب بالعفو عن ماكسويل، رغم أن محاميها ألمحوا إلى إمكانية السعي للحصول على عفو رئاسي أو دعم قانوني خلال الاستئناف الجاري أمام المحكمة العليا، والمقرر البت فيه في سبتمبر القادم.
وكانت ماكسويل قد خضعت أخيراً لجلسة استجواب استمرت يومين مع نائب وزير العدل الأمريكي تود بلانش، وتدرس لجنة الرقابة في مجلس النواب استدعاءها للإدلاء بشهادتها، لكنها رفضت منحها الحصانة أو مشاركة الأسئلة مسبقاً كما طلب فريق الدفاع.

Maxwell was convicted in 2021 on charges related to recruiting underage girls for sexual exploitation by Epstein and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. She had previously been housed in a low-security prison in Tallahassee, Florida, before being moved to a prison camp in Texas known for housing high-profile individuals like Elizabeth Holmes (founder of Theranos) and Jen Shah (from the reality show "The Real Housewives").
Low-security federal prison camps are typically designated for inmates considered to be less dangerous, often lacking walls, and are used to facilitate internal work such as maintenance and gardening without strict security measures.
Maxwell's attorney declined to comment on the reasons for the transfer, although it is believed that the move is related to the rapid developments in the case, especially following a wave of public outrage after the Justice Department's decision not to release further documents related to the Epstein case.
For his part, former President Donald Trump confirmed that he has not received any request for a pardon for Maxwell, although her attorneys hinted at the possibility of seeking a presidential pardon or legal support during the ongoing appeal before the Supreme Court, which is set to be decided next September.
Maxwell recently underwent a two-day interrogation session with U.S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, and the House Oversight Committee is considering subpoenaing her to testify, but she refused to grant immunity or share the questions in advance as requested by the defense team.
