A recent American-Chinese study involving 30,000 participants has demonstrated a close relationship between the number of hours spent in sunlight and the level of life satisfaction.
The researchers used survey data alongside information from 824 weather stations and found that individuals who were exposed to more than 11 hours of sunlight daily reported higher levels of satisfaction and happiness.
On the other hand, those who were exposed to less than 3 hours only recorded a slight decrease in overall satisfaction, although no signs of severe depression were observed.
Interestingly, the study revealed that the impact of sunny weather during the previous week was stronger than the effect of the day of the survey itself, indicating that mood is influenced by the accumulation of weather conditions rather than just the moment.
The results also indicated that sunlight does not significantly affect symptoms of depression on a single day, but it gradually reduces their severity over the week.
The researchers recommend engaging in outdoor activities during the day to avoid the negative impact of cloudy weather on mental health.
