Customers of internet and telecommunications services in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, as well as in Giza, have complained of severe disruptions and slow internet and phone services following a massive fire at the Ramses Central in downtown Cairo.

A huge fire broke out on Monday evening at the Ramses Central, which is operated by the Egyptian Telecommunications Company, leading to the disruption of internet, landline, and mobile phone services in many areas of Cairo and Giza.

The incident, which occurred in one of the main equipment rooms, caused vital communication cables to stop functioning, affecting millions of users and resulting in a temporary digital paralysis that included applications such as "Facebook," "Instagram," "WhatsApp," and "TikTok," according to reports from the global site Downdetector.

Fire and emergency response teams immediately moved to contain the fire and control its effects, and the electricity supply to the entire building was cut off to ensure safety.

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority confirmed that the Egyptian Telecommunications Company is working to gradually restore services in the coming hours, while assessing the affected services and customers to ensure compensation.

The head of the Communications Committee in the Egyptian House of Representatives, Representative Ahmed Badawy, indicated that the fire has been completely controlled and that the impact was limited, especially on users of "we" SIM cards in areas close to the central office, confirming that services would fully return within hours.

For its part, the Media Production City clarified that the fire did not affect live television broadcasting of programs, but it caused difficulties for program producers in communicating with guests due to the internet and communication outages.

The Minister of Communications, Dr. Amr Talaat, is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the relevant authorities to ensure service stability and prevent the recurrence of the incident.

The Ramses Central connects several sub-central offices and serves millions of users in the central areas of the capital.

The fire, which is believed to have been caused by a technical or electrical malfunction, resulted in damage to several main communication cables, leading to the disruption of internet and phone services in wide areas.

The Ministry of Health and the Egyptian Ambulance Authority have not reported any injuries or fatalities due to the fire so far, as the building was evacuated quickly and fire response teams intervened effectively.
