ألقت الشرطة في مقاطعة ميرسيد، جنوبي كاليفورنيا، القبض على امرأة تبلغ من العمر 69 عاماً بعد العثور على أكثر من 100 قطة داخل شاحنة مهملة في موقف سيارات، في واحدة من أبشع قضايا القسوة على الحيوانات التي شهدتها المنطقة مؤخراً.
ووفق بيان صدر عن مكتب مأمور المقاطعة، تم اعتقال جيني ماكسون، المقيمة في لونغ بيتش، يوم الأحد، بعد تلقي بلاغ بشأن عدد كبير من القطط المحبوسة داخل شاحنة متوقفة أمام مطعم «تاكو بيل» في بلدة سانتا نيلا.
وعند وصول الضباط إلى المكان، لاحظوا وجود نحو 20 قطة في حالة حرجة من خلال النوافذ المغلقة.
واستُدعي فريق مكافحة الحيوانات على الفور، ليعثر في الداخل على 106 قطط تعاني من الهزال الشديد، بالإضافة إلى 28 قطة نافقة، وكل ذلك وسط غياب تام للطعام والماء.
وأظهرت الصور الملتقطة من موقع الحادث قططاً تلتصق بزجاج النوافذ، وأخرى محتجزة داخل صناديق كرتونية داخل الشاحنة، وتم نقل جميع الحيوانات إلى ملجأ مقاطعة ميرسيد، حيث تخضع حاليًاً للعلاج البيطري، على أن تُتاح لاحقاً للتبني بعد التأكد من سلامتها الصحية.
ووجهت السلطات إلى ماكسون 93 تهمة تتعلق بالقسوة على الحيوانات، وجرى احتجازها في سجن المقاطعة بانتظار استكمال التحقيقات. ولم يتضح بعد ما إذا كانت لا تزال قيد التوقيف أو ما إذا كانت قد وكلت محامياً للدفاع عنها.
وفي بيان رسمي، حذّر مكتب الشريف من خطورة ترك الحيوانات داخل المركبات في الأجواء الحارة، مشيراً إلى أن درجات الحرارة قد ترتفع بشكل كبير خلال دقائق حتى مع فتح النوافذ، مما يشكل خطراً جسيماً على حياة الحيوانات.
وأكد المكتب أن التحقيق لا يزال مستمراً، وأنه سيتم إصدار تحديثات لاحقة بشأن مصير القطط وجهود التبني.
The police in Merced County, Southern California, arrested a 69-year-old woman after finding more than 100 cats inside an abandoned truck in a parking lot, in one of the most horrific cases of animal cruelty the area has seen recently.
According to a statement released by the county sheriff's office, Jenny Maxon, a resident of Long Beach, was arrested on Sunday after receiving a report about a large number of cats trapped inside a truck parked in front of a Taco Bell restaurant in the town of Santa Nella.
Upon arrival, officers noticed about 20 cats in critical condition through the closed windows.
An animal control team was immediately called, and they found 106 cats suffering from severe malnutrition inside, along with 28 dead cats, all in the complete absence of food and water.
Photos taken from the scene showed cats pressing against the window glass, and others confined inside cardboard boxes within the truck. All the animals were transported to the Merced County shelter, where they are currently receiving veterinary treatment and will later be made available for adoption once their health is confirmed.
Authorities charged Maxon with 93 counts of animal cruelty, and she was held in the county jail pending further investigations. It remains unclear whether she is still in custody or if she has retained an attorney to defend her.
In an official statement, the sheriff's office warned about the dangers of leaving animals inside vehicles in hot weather, noting that temperatures can rise significantly within minutes even with the windows open, posing a serious threat to the animals' lives.
The office confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that further updates will be issued regarding the fate of the cats and adoption efforts.
