U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a ban on granting visas to new foreign students wishing to enroll at Harvard University on Wednesday, in a new episode of the escalating conflict between him and several prestigious educational institutions that he accuses of promoting extreme progressive leftist ideas.

Trump stated in a statement: "I have concluded that it is necessary to restrict the entry of foreigners wishing to come to the United States to participate, exclusively or primarily, in a study program at Harvard University or in a student exchange program hosted by the university."

This escalation is the latest in the ongoing confrontation between the White House and the oldest and wealthiest university in the country. A federal court in Boston had previously prevented the Department of Homeland Security from blocking the entry of international students at Harvard, but Trump resorted in his new order to a different legal authority.

This move comes after Harvard University refused to comply with a set of demands made by the federal government, which escalated recently after the Department of Homeland Security stated that the university had declined to provide records related to misconduct committed by foreign students.

Harvard University claims that it responded to the request, but the government deemed its response insufficient.
