هددت إدارة الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، (الأربعاء)، جامعة كولومبيا المرموقة في نيويورك، بسحب اعتمادها، الأمر الذي قد يؤدي إلى حرمانها من التمويل الفيدرالي.
ويتهم ترمب الجامعات الأمريكية الشهيرة بمعاداة السامية؛ لأنّها سمحت للاحتجاجات الطلابية ضدّ الحرب بين إسرائيل وحركة حماس في قطاع غزة بالاستمرار في أحرامها الجامعية.
واتهمت وزيرة التعليم ليندا مكماهون جامعة كولومبيا بعدم حماية الطلاب اليهود في حرمها، رغم تقديمهم طلبات بذلك، الأمر الذي قد يكون سببا وراء سحب اعتمادها الرسمي.
وقالت الوزيرة في بيان: «بعد الهجمات الإرهابية التي نفذتها حركة حماس في السابع من أكتوبر 2023، تجاهلت إدارة كولومبيا بشكل متعمّد المضايقات التي يتعرّض لها الطلاب اليهود في حرمها الجامعي. هذا ليس أمرًا غير أخلاقي فحسب، بل غير قانوني أيضًا».
وقد يعني سحب اعتماد جامعة كولومبيا فقدانها التمويل الفيدرالي. وكانت إدارة ترمب خفّضت التمويل الفيدرالي للجامعة بنحو 400 مليون دولار في بداية مارس. ومنذ ذلك الحين، أعلنت الجامعة أنّها بدأت بإصلاحات جذرية طلبتها الإدارة في محاولة منها لاستعادة هذه الأموال.
The administration of President Donald Trump threatened, on Wednesday, the prestigious Columbia University in New York with the withdrawal of its accreditation, which could lead to the loss of federal funding.
Trump accuses famous American universities of anti-Semitism for allowing student protests against the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip to continue on their campuses.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon accused Columbia University of failing to protect Jewish students on its campus, despite their requests for such protection, which could be a reason for the withdrawal of its official accreditation.
The secretary stated in a statement: “After the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023, the Columbia administration deliberately ignored the harassment faced by Jewish students on its campus. This is not only unethical but also illegal.”
Withdrawing Columbia University's accreditation could mean the loss of its federal funding. The Trump administration had cut the university's federal funding by about $400 million at the beginning of March. Since then, the university has announced that it has begun radical reforms requested by the administration in an attempt to regain that funding.
